Lyle Abbott 14/09/1945 to 23/05/2025

Lyle began his adult volunteering as a Leader in the Scout Section with his beloved 1st Irthlingborough as soon as he could following his 18th Birthday in 1963 and he has continued to be a stalwart of the Group ever since.

Lyle had completed 61 years of continuous service and was awarded his 60 years long service award in December 2023
Having been awarded several good service awards over the years, including a Medal of Merit in 1981 and Silver Acorn in 1993, his ‘Service of an exceptional nature’ was recognised when he was awarded the Silver Wolf in the April 2008 St George’s Day awards. This award is the highest award for good service in Scouting .

He did in fact lose his original silver wolf and purchased a replacement at no insignificant cost to himself. Of course he subsequently found the original somewhere in his house so could be one of very few people to possess two Silver Wolf Awards.

Lyle held various roles in Scouting, 61 years with 1st Irthlingborough but additionally with Wellingborough District and also with 1st Murcia Sur Scout Group in Spain.
His main roles were:-
1st Irthlingborough
Assistant Scout Leader - December 1963 to January 1973
Group Scout Leader - January 1973 to Jan 2006
Group Supporter - January 2006 to February 2008
Group Communications and Media Development Manager - February 2008 to November 2024
Group Scout Active Support (founder) Member - January 2011 to May 2025
Group Chairman - May 2015 to September 2022
Group Scout Leader - September 2022 to May 2025
Wellingborough District
District Scouter (Scouts) - May 1969 to January 1973
1st Mercia Sur (Spain)
Group Section Assistant - July 2008 to June 2009
Assistant GSL - June 2009 to March 2012

As you can clearly see we were very lucky and privileged to have Lyle not only at Irthlingborough Scout Group but in Nene Valley District, formally Rushden District but also as part of the World wide Scout movement. Lyle has helped to shape so many young people over these years and has supported adults to become great leaders too.

From the bottom of my heart I can say with no doubt, we will miss Lyle so much. We are all thinking of Lyle’s family and his extended Scouting family. Thank you Lyle for your 61 years of exceptional service. Rest in peace.

Funeral arrangements to follow.
