The Liberal Democrats have slammed the Government for voting down crucial amendments to the Health Bill that would have legally mandated higher safety standards, one-to-one midwifery, and 24/7 consultant cover across all maternity units.

​Liberal Democrat Health Spokesperson Helen Morgan MP didn't hold back:
​“65% of maternity units are unsafe. More women are suffering severe bleeds. More women are suffering major injuries. More women are dying. How long will we continue to accept the unacceptable for mothers and babies?"

​While ministers did commit to establishing a statutory Maternity and Neonatal Commissioner following intense Lib Dem pressure, the party insists much more work is needed to make Britain the safest place to have a baby.

Evil is being committed by the Netanyahu government. Liberal Democrats oppose it. We support the bans on imports from the illegal settlements being introduced by Britain, Canada and France.

Liberal Democrats are pushing the government to introduce emergency legislation to fast-track a comprehensive trade ban with illegal West Bank settlements, warning that ministers must act urgently to prevent the total destruction of a two-state solution.

​Liberal Democrat Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Calum Miller MP said:
​“Labour has finally abandoned Keir Starmer’s pedestrian approach to the accelerating annexation in the West Bank. The settlement trade ban is a long overdue step in the right direction, but Ministers now need to move with urgency. The current extremist Israeli cabinet is racing to establish facts on the ground to prevent a two-state solution. Liberal Democrats are calling on the Government to introduce emergency legislation to implement this ban without delay. We must make sure there is no UK complicity in the sustainability of illegal settlements.”

Local Government reorganisation in Staffordshire is being paused because the Government is now unsure of its legality. As Liberal Democrat local government spokeswoman Zöe Franklin MP has said: “This is an embarrassing and chaotic climbdown, which has resulted in already cash-strapped councils wasting huge sums on plans the government told them were legally watertight.” Meanwhile Reform councils which promised to cut council tax and instead raised it are pursuing litigation on the issue at the expense of council-tax payers while cutting services.
