🌊 BATHING SITES BECOME THE LATEST CASUALTY IN THE WATER COMPANIES’ ASSAULT ON NATURE 🌊
Across the country, our local communities are being robbed of their natural spaces. Beautiful bathing sites, meant to be safe havens for families, swimmers, and wildlife. are being left 'poor' and completely unswimmable.
This isn't just an environmental failure; it’s a public health hazard and an absolute betrayal of the public trust. The Liberal Democrats are calling it out for exactly what it is: an unchecked assault on nature.
“This is the latest example of water company impunity being laid bare. Bathing sites are meant to be there for the public to enjoy nature and yet they're another casualty in the water companies' assault on nature.
It is an outrage that the Government has failed time after time to come down hard on these polluters and protect the public's health. They need to get on with the job of replacing Ofwat and make sure the water bosses are punished for this scandal." Tim Farron MP- Environment spokesperson
For too long, water companies have treated our precious blue spaces as open sewers, confident that the penalties would never match the crime. Tim Farron MP summed up the anger felt by millions of people across the UK:
“Pollution, sewage pollution into our lakes, rivers and seas is disgusting... It's not just disgusting, it's completely outrageous.” Tim Farron MP
The Fight for Clean Water in Parliament 🏛️
While the government’s new Water Bill talks a big game, it simply does not go far enough to stop the rot. It tinkers around the edges while our rivers and coastlines suffer.
That’s why the Liberal Democrats are actively fighting in Parliament to completely overhaul the water industry. The Lib Dems are tabling tough amendments to the bill, forcing a vote on real, structural change:
❌ An end to fat-cat executive bonuses: No more rewarding failure and environmental destruction with massive payouts.
📊 Total transparency on sewage spills: Forcing water companies to publish the actual, raw volume of sewage spilled into our ecosystems, ending the cover-ups.
⚖️ A powerhouse regulator with real teeth: Fully replacing the toothless Ofwat with a new regulator equipped to genuinely penalize polluters and ban bonuses.
🏡 Public benefit corporations: Overhauling the business model to transform water companies into public benefit entities, legally putting the environment and local communities ahead of corporate profit.
The Liberal Democrat policy is simple and unyielding: If you pollute our environment, you should pay the price. Taxpayers shouldn't have to clean up the mess, and our precious local wildlife certainly shouldn't pay with their habitats. 🦆🦢
Stand With Us 🗳️
Our rivers, lakes, and seas belong to the community, not to the balance sheets of water companies. The Lib Dems won't stop fighting in Parliament and on the ground until our waters are sparkling, healthy, and safe once again.
Do you agree that it’s time for water companies to clean up their act?
