WOW - SCRAPPING OF COUNCILS 'PAUSED' 👇

⏸️ The decision to merge Rugby with other councils in the north of Warwickshire has been 'paused' by the government.

Rugby Conservatives welcome this decision from the bungling Labour government.

1️⃣ This now opens the door to a proper restructuring of local government - with all district councils merging with the county council to form one council for Warwickshire.

That is what will save the most money for taxpayers and it's what Rugby residents want.

That's also why we wrote our own letter to the government - and refused to sign the council's official letter alongside Labour, the Lib Dems and Reform.

There is now concern that Rugby Borough Council will have already spent tens of thousands of pounds after starting the joint process with Warwickshire's other councils. The government must reimburse the council for any costs it has incurred.

❌ The council has also invested significant time, energy and resource into creating a new 'town council' for Rugby. This work must stop immediately.

A small town council would be vital for Rugby if all of the councils were being scrapped - this is obviously now no longer the case.

Rugby Borough Council now needs to refocus all its energy into town centre regeneration.

🗳️ Elections to Rugby Borough Council will now take place in 2027 as normal.

❌ Work towards a new 'town council' must stop immediately until the government confirms plans for the merging of councils.

🏗️ Rugby Borough Council must now fully focus on saving our town centre through regeneration.

1️⃣ We will continue to make the case for one unitary - as this is the sensible option for Warwickshire.

💪 We'll continue to stick up for what's right for Rugby.

COTON PARK GIANT WAREHOUSE PLANS 😲

There is a new planning application for the remaining site on Coton Park - with proposals for giant warehouses close to residential properties.

❌ Rugby Conservatives demanded that this land remained as a residential allocation. However, Labour and Lib Dem councillors in Rugby have allocated this site for employment use - and for multiple giant 'sheds'.

The developer isn't even waiting for the local plan to be finalised in the new year - they're cracking on with a planning application now. We've included some key images from the application below 👇

The application documents show that:

💥 some of the units will be 24 METRES in height - and 550,000sq ft
💥 units just 40m from residential properties will be 18m in height
💥 these will be large logistics units - likely to have 24/7 operation
💥 car access via Castle Mound Way - with additional pedestrian access into Coton Park and past primary school

🤨 The developer has also included a 'Lanscape and Visual Impact Assessment' which barely mentions the impact on nearby houses.

🕵️ We are going to look at these proposals in more detail over the coming days and will provide further details.

FLY-TIPPING CRISIS IN RUGBY'S RURAL AREAS 🚛 HOW TO REPORT 👇

There appears to be a fly-tipping crisis across Rugby's rural areas.

There has been an increase recently in the amount of rubbish being fly-tipped around our villages - as well as delays in the waste being collected.

Earlier this year, Rugby Conservatives proposed increasing the budget to employ additional staff to collect waste and to investigate fly-tipping. However, these proposals were rejected by Rugby's Labour and Lib Dem councillors.

👍 If you have a Conservative councillor, they will also report your concerns to the council - however, it is most effective when residents have also reported the issue directly.

Remember - the council is only responsible for fly-tipping on public highways and public land. For private land, this becomes the responsibility of the landowner.

LAWFORD/ADDISON ROAD - 4 MONTHS OF ROADWORKS 🚧🚦

Major roadworks are set to begin at the junction of Addison Road and Lawford Road next week - and will last four months.

The works are part of the county council's casualty reduction scheme which includes, 'junction widening, footway improvement, new street lighting, road markings & signage.'

The works are scheduled to begin on Monday 14th September and finish on Monday 18th January. Please share this post with friends, family and neighbours as these works are likely to cause significant delays to journeys around this area.

Plans to entirely redesign the roundabout were first put forward in 2018 - but were delayed after it was discovered there would have to be significant diversion of utilities for the works to begin.

This was despite a county council report describing the roundabout as the '10th most accident-prone junction in Warwickshire'.

£400K FOR NEW TOWN CENTRE SIGNS ➡️ SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS 👇

Rugby Borough Council has revealed plans to spend £395,000 on new signage for the town centre.

The new signs will replace the current black signs with white writing - with new signage using colours and branding similar to the lamppost images.

We've included an illustration of the new designs below 👇

💷 These signs will cost £395,000 in total - £40k for the design, £15k in for planning permission, £45k in county council licence fees, £20k for county council 'highway technical approval' and £275k for production and installation as well as removal of the old, black signs.

The council also expects to have to budget £200,000 over a ten-year period for replacements.

3️⃣ There will be three types of signage - 'gateway' signs, 'monoliths' and 'fingerposts' (which are similar in style to the current black directional signs).

There there will be 3 'gateway' signs - at the top of Dunchurch Road, on Clifton Road near Bath Street and at the top of Newbold Road. There will not be one of these welcome signs at the train station. These will give visitors 'a warm welcome' - accoridng to the documents.

There will also be 10 'monoliths' - which will include a map - and 15 'fingerposts...directing to key destinations'.

OUR LETTER TO RUGBY'S HOSPITAL BOSSES 🏥✉️

We’ve written to Professor Andy Hardy, Chief Executive of UHCW NHS Trust, raising serious concerns about the lack of urgent and emergency care provision in Rugby - and the impact this is having on local people.

This followed over 5,000 Rugby residents signing our petition for improvements to services at St Cross.

Here are the five key points we’ve put directly to the Trust:

❌ 1. Rugby still doesn’t have doctor‑led urgent care

Three years after commitments were made, St Cross *still* only treats minor injuries and illnesses. No specialist doctors on site. No provision for very sick adults or children.

🏥 2. Coventry A&E is overwhelmed - with Rugby residents paying the price

We highlight repeated ambulance queues, long waits, and even a 'Critical Incident' declared earlier this year. Rugby’s growing population is adding pressure because we have no local alternative.

🏘️ 3. Rugby is expanding fast - but healthcare capacity isn’t

Data from the Office for National Statistics shows Rugby’s population has risen to 122,000+, yet St Cross has not been expanded to match demand. The Trust itself warned that its capacity is 'fully utilised'.

📍 The Local Plan contains no new urgent or emergency healthcare infrastructure

Despite UHCW saying additional services are needed, Rugby council’s final Local Plan includes no new urgent care facilities for Rugby beyond GP surgeries already secured years ago.

🛍️ 'Health on the High Street' plans have stalled - delaying upgrades at St Cross

Trust papers suggest delays in securing the old Wilko’s unit are now holding up new theatres and wards at St Cross. We’ve asked for clarity on what’s happening and what the Trust is doing to move it forward.

CEMEX TOWER ALDI UPDATES 👇 BAT SURVEY AND TRAFFIC

There has been a planning update to proposals to build an Aldi on the Cemex House site on Evreux Way in Rugby's town centre - with a 32-page bat survey recently added.

The application proposes a 1,300sqm retail space with 96 parking spaces next to McDonalds in town - following the demolition of the empty Cemex Tower building.

Entrance and exit to the site would be from Corporation Street - using the McDonalds access as an additional exit to the site. Many residents will be concerned that a new supermarket will add to already standstill traffic around our town centre. One documents predicts that 387 cars will visit the site every Saturday between 11am and 2pm.

Although acknowledging concerns about increased traffic, the council's report states that, in conclusion, 'It is considered that overall, the proposed development would not have an unacceptable impact on the safety and operation of the transport network.'

Warwickshire County Council initially raised concerns about the development - however, they now have 'no objection'. The council claims that that supermarket traffic will have limited imapct on journey times - claiming the extra traffic will only add 6 - 9 seconds at the Corporation Street/Newbold Road roundabout during the Saturday afternoon peak.

Demolition is expected to take 20 weeks according to documentation on the planning portal - starting with the removal of asbestos and then moving onto the eastern side of the structure. One report suggests a lane closure on Evreux Way may be required to demolish the western side - but no timescale is given for this.

IS RUGBY’S MP COPYING OUR HOMEWORK? 🤔

Recently at Rugby Conservatives, we’ve noticed something interesting.

When we post about an issue or concern in Rugby, Rugby's MP posts about something remarkably similar shortly after.

📮 On 12th August, we asked local residents if they were having issues with their post - and we wrote to Royal Mail about what you said a few days later.

Then, on 20th August, John Slinger posted about missing Royal Mail deliveries.

🏥 Then, on 26th August, we posted about A&E visits in July, the growth in Rugby’s population and the need for improvements at St Cross.

Mere hours later, John decided to ask the Health Secretary about the organisation of health services. (It is actually the Hospital Trust who take the decisions, which is why we’re writing to their Chief Executive.)

🚏 And then today, his page has posted about changes to bus services in Rugby - which we posted about last weekend.

🗣️ Dozens of people have replied in our comments that John doesn’t always reply to his emails. If you’ve got an issue, let us know – we can post about it and he might just respond!

PLANS FOR NEW PETROL STATION IN RUGBY ⛽🚗

A planning application is currently registered with Rugby Borough Council for a new petrol station on Boughton Road - on the site that was recently used as a hand car wash but was previously a petrol station.

The application was submitted in 2025 but there is still no final decision from the council.

A 'Transport Statement' was recently added to the planning application - possibly due to an objection given by Warwickshire County Council's highways department.

Amusingly, the 'Transport Statement' devotes two pages to 'Access by non-car modes' for anyone wishing to travel to the petrol station by bicycle or bus.

As you can see in the image below, the proposals include 8 filling bays and electric charging points. They expect between 50 and 60 vehicles to enter the site during its busiest periods.

SHOULD LOCAL ROADS BE 20 MILES AN HOUR? 🚗

It has been reported today that Birmingham City Council is proposing to change all residential streets and local centres from 30mph to 20mph across its city boundaries - covering 95% of roads.

The only roads exempt from this would be strategic roads.

Birmingham City Council has been debating this idea for a number of years - but have formally added the proposal to its final local plan which is currently being consulted on.
