Every second counts in a medical emergency.
That's why we welcome the publication of the The APPG for Air Ambulances' new report, Critical Moments, Life-Saving Infrastructure: The Case for Safeguarded 24/7 On-Site Hospital Helipads at Major Trauma Centres and Specialist Hospitals.
The report highlights significant variation in access to 24/7 on-site hospital helipads across the UK and the impact this can have on patients requiring urgent specialist care. When air ambulances cannot land directly at a hospital, valuable time can be lost during secondary transfers – time that critically ill and injured patients may not have.
At The Air Ambulance Service, our crews witness first-hand the importance of rapid access to specialist treatment. While air ambulance charities provide the aircraft, clinical teams and life-saving care, hospital helipad provision is a vital part of the wider healthcare infrastructure that requires support from Government, the NHS and healthcare partners.
We support the report's call for a more consistent, resilient and equitable approach to 24/7 on-site helipad provision across Major Trauma Centres and specialist hospitals, helping ensure that access to specialist care is not determined by geography.

Together, we can help create a healthcare system that is fit for purpose and gives patients the best possible chance when every moment matters.
Over half of major UK trauma hospitals don't have 24/7 on-site helipads, meaning air ambulances often have to land off-site and delay urgent care. I just signed the petition to fix this—will you add your name?
