Our report to Clanfield parish council, what we have been up to last month
District Councillors Report to Clanfield Parish Council 12th May 2026

Your district councillors have been somewhat distracted by campaigning over the last month, so have limited matters to report for this council meeting.

While campaigning we noted note that issues raised on the doorstep include potholes, the Sunderton Lane proposed development and general issues around national politics. Local Government Reorganisation was hardly raised at all, but we will continue to make our views known that residents of Clanfield in general would prefer to remain with the rest of East Hampshire, rather than be part of Portsmouth.

Grants
We have already received several applications for our councillor grants this year and are confident that we will spend all our allocated funds completely again. We’ve approved councillor grants for the Hampshire Monday Club for their environmental work and the Clanfield Centre for the ‘Clean Up Clanfield’ event that takes place on Sunday 31stMay (in which we intend to take part as volunteers).

Councillor Surgeries
We continue to hold on the first Tuesday of each month, and at our May meeting we discussed on general issues of politics, the current state of the Sunderton field campaign (highlighting the delays and a likely need for a further round of public consultations) as well as the estate management of one of the new developments, notably clearance of litter and control of parking in the unadopted roads. To promote these surgeries, while campaigning in Clanfield we gave fliers to any resident interested in attending.

Is Clanfield suffering from a rat invasion?
A resident has contacted me to complain about rats around her home and if there is anything she can do. Sadly the council no longer offer a free service to remove rats, but there are still plenty of things that you can do to keep rats away, see https://www.easthants.gov.uk/neighbourhoods/pest-advice . A key issue is to deprive them of food by ensuring your's and your pet's food (and food waste) is secure and not accessible. She also thought that there may be rats around the village pond, but on a more positive note this may be water voles, who do live in ponds and do resemble rats. Please do let us know if you feel Clanfield is suffering from 'Ratmageddon' https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4gvk397j80o , have you been plagued by them personally?

Rats are multiplying at speed in urban areas. So, what's really behind the boom - and is it now unstoppable?

John and Chris visited Miniland Farm, an organisation set up in East Hampshire to support children with special educational needs; interacting with animals is an important part of this (see https://minilandfarm.com/ for more details) . Some of our Clanfield children are supported at MIniland Farm.

John and Chris in the Memorial Hall, congratulating Homestart Butser new volunteers on completing their training. Homestart Butster is a charity that supports new parents who may be struggling with this role (see https://homestart-butser.org.uk/ for more details) . Your councillors have helped Homestart Butser become more active in Clanfield, including by providing councillor grants to support their work here.
