Wentworth Woodhouse is open to the public for visits to the house and gardens, afternoon tea and a variety of events throughout the year. Wentworth Woodhouse is a Grade 1 listed country house in the village of Wentworth, South Yorkshire. With an east front of 185 meters, this impressive mansion is reputed to have the longest country house facade in Europe. The history of Wentworth Woodhouse, as well as the village of Wentworth, is inextricably linked with the history of the great aristocratic families - the Wentworths, Watsons and Fitzwilliams - who presided over it for generations.

Today, the St Leger Stakes celebrates its 250th anniversary 🏇

First contested in 1776, the St Leger is the world's oldest classic horserace and shares a special connection with Wentworth Woodhouse.

Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, who lived at Wentworth Woodhouse, owned the horse that won the very first St Leger race and was one of the Festival's founders. In fact, the race was almost named the Rockingham Stakes in his honour before becoming known as the St Leger.

As celebrations take place this weekend at Doncaster Racecourse, we're proud to reflect on Wentworth Woodhouse's place in the story of one of Britain's most enduring sporting traditions.
