Ten years. Remembering Jo’s legacy and the values she stood for.

Today marks ten years since Jo was killed.

We remember Jo as a mother, sister, daughter, wife, friend, campaigner and public servant. We remember her courage, her compassion, and her belief that we have more in common than that which divides us.

This is a day for reflection. It is also a moment to recommit to the work Jo inspired: building a kinder, fairer, more tolerant world, and choosing connection over division.

My sincere thanks to Cllr Donna Sutton for crocheting Dinnington’s very special post box topper. Thank you Donna, it means so much. The clock marks the time of the Aberfan disaster, and this year’s 60th anniversary later in 2026 is a poignant reminder of the 144 lives lost, including 116 children.
I’ve fitted the topper to the post box opposite Coronation Park this morning and will leave it in place until after the Orgreave anniversary on Thursday.
Today, I’m at City Hall marking the anniversary of Orgreave and continuing to show my support for the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign. It was great to bump into Dinnington Colliery Old Boys at City Hall today.
Update- I’ve been speaking with the Orgreave Inquiry panel. The panel have reflected, the deadline isn’t May and still want the stories and evidence to be shared. Details on the Inquiry update are in the photos.

It was great to see such a well-attended U14 football tournament on Saturday. The atmosphere was fantastic, and it was wonderful to see so many young people enjoying sport and representing their teams.

This morning, I attended a site meeting with Highways, and I’m pleased to confirm that the replacement road sign for Tiercel Mews has already been approved this afternoon. Residents have been affected by the mistaken assumption that the road is a cut through route, so I’m sure the new signage will be a welcome improvement.
I’m also pleased with the new sign installed on Victoria Street, which looks much better.
This week’s traffic delay report contains only two new additions.
BT- Lamb Lane Firbeck 20/07 to 07/08, road closure near Haven Cottage.
Yorkshire Water- Lodge Lane, Dinnington 17/06 to 18/06 Two Way Signals.
As always, if there are any local issues you’d like to raise, please don’t hesitate to get in touch: [email protected]

June 7th World Food Safety Day

I would like to celebrate all our fantastic food and drink businesses in the Dinnington ward.

A compliant business regarding food safety has a score of 3 or more.

In the Dinnington ward, every food business has achieved a compliant score.

Whether it’s a café, pub, restaurant, takeaway, bakery or local shop, these businesses are at the heart of our community.
They provide us with great food and drink, create local jobs, support our economy, and offer welcoming spaces where people can meet, socialise and connect.
Many of these businesses also serve as important community hubs, providing safe, warm and friendly environments that help bring people together.
On World Food Safety Day, it is especially important to recognise the dedication, professionalism and hard work of everyone involved in preparing, serving and delivering food safely every day.

To all the business owners, managers and staff across the Dinnington ward, thank you for the invaluable contribution you make.

Whether you’re checking a local business or venturing further for a weekend away, everybody can check the hygiene rating of a business.

The food hygiene rating is not a guide to food quality. The information on businesses is held on behalf of local authorities in England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. Any queries about individual businesses should be directed to the appropriate local authority.

Yesterday evening, I attended the fundraiser for the RBL Dinnington Branch and RAOB Dinnington Branch. It was a poignant evening as we remembered Bill Loftus, who sadly passed away last Friday.
Bill made an enormous contribution to the Dinnington community over many years, and his dedication and friendship will not be forgotten.
The strength shown by his wife Jan and the warmth of his friends meant there were still smiles and laughter shared throughout the evening. We even managed to win the second round of the quiz!
My thoughts and condolences are with Jan, Bill’s family, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Rest in peace, Bill. Thank you for everything you gave to Dinnington. I’m pleased the fundraiser and today’s veterans breakfast still took place, it’s the legacy that Bill leaves .

Please find below the latest traffic delay report for the Dinnington Ward.
I am pleased to report that planning permission was granted on May 29th 2026 for the demolition of 46–52 Laughton Road. The original proposal in the plans was to refurbish the existing block; however, the approved scheme will now see the buildings demolished and replaced with a new development. This revision will support a more attractive and co-ordinated appearance.

I’ve had the pleasure of supporting the charity Re-engage for many years. The charity brings together local residents aged 75 and over, who live on their own. This afternoon, we will share food, friendship, laughter and play bingo.
Today will be especially meaningful, as we will also mark our own Great Get Together and remember Jo Cox MP. The tenth anniversary of Jo’s death is in a few weeks time. Re-engage embodies everything Jo Cox MP stood for, including tackling loneliness and promoting inclusion.
Hosting a tea party for local residents remains one of my favourite days of the year. Thank you to the four fantastic volunteers who are working, chaperoning and driving local residents today.

Today marked the end of an era for Dinnington. Julie is part of the wonderful library team and has retired today after an incredible 48 years and 4 months of service.
The library staff are always incredibly supportive to me. Over nearly five decades, Julie worked across Rotherham and Dinnington, including at the former council offices on New Street.
Julie told us the last 13 years at Dinnington Library and Community Hub were the years she loved most, serving the community she cares about.
Thank you to Jake Richards MP for taking the time to meet with us today and to our mayor Cllr Rashid for inviting us to the Town Hall to celebrate such a remarkable milestone this Summer.
Julie is a truly wonderful lady who has given so much to our community. Wishing her a long, happy, and well-deserved retirement.

I am delighted to bring the traffic delay report this week.
It contains the information we have been waiting for.
Closure for Doe Quarry Lane in the Summer Holidays for the carriageway resurfacing.
In September, traffic lights will be in place for the installation of a new pedestrian crossing on Doe Quarry Lane.
Vehicle activated signage to be installed on Oldcotes Road in September.

Please note the change in alternating weeks for my councillor surgery.

There is a fantastic free of charge half term event taking place at Dinnington Resource Centre this Thursday including games and balloon modelling. Booking is required. Suitable for children aged 4-12 years.
