Latest Google Earth view of the ancient fields on Rooley Moor. Some of these go back thousands of years from when the moor was first farmed and inhabited. The associated burial ground of the settlement lies ENE of the fields at Bagden Hillocks. Some of the fields are at an altitude of > 395m above sea level.

Although I have travelled Rooley Moor Road end-to-end by car as a child. My interest in the Moor was rekindled with the discovery of an unusual place-name just to the North east of the moor. This one name inspired a whole blog and an interest in the copious medieval documentation of the area. Read more here:

Finding the Ding place name was surprising enough, but researching it revealed an exciting new side to Rochdale's exotic(yes exotic!) past!
