CURIOUS RIPON 👢 | Meet Old Boots

This extraordinary gentleman was one of Ripon’s great characters.

Tom Crudd -better known as Old Boots- worked at the Unicorn and became famous for his remarkable profile.

His nose and chin were said to be so close together that he could hold a coin between them - and visitors apparently paid him to demonstrate it!

Later generations even turned Old Boots into one of Ripon’s resident ghosts.

☔🎶 A little drizzle wasn’t going to stop Market Day Melodies!

Thank you to everyone who has so far turned out in Ripon for another Market Day Melodies session.

As ever, the market was officially opened at 11am by our Bellman, Geoffrey, ringing the bell 🔔 before today’s live music from the brilliant Lily Worth 🎤

It is lovely to see people stopping to listen and enjoy the music while visiting the market and centre — despite the rather Yorkshire weather!

There are still three more Market Day Melodies sessions to come after today, so there’s plenty more live music to enjoy in the Market Place.

Come along, support our market and city centre businesses, and enjoy a little extra music and atmosphere in the heart of Ripon. 💛

CURIOUS RIPON 🏥 | Ripon’s medieval l***r chapel

You may have passed this little chapel on Magdalens Road without realising just how old it is.

The Hospital of St Mary Magdalene was founded by Archbishop Thurstan in the 12th century. Its sisters and priest cared for people affected by leprosy, supported blind priests born in Ripon and gave alms to the poor.

By the mid-1300s, there were apparently no longer enough leprosy patients to need a separate house, and that building was demolished - but remarkably, the chapel survived.

Historic England describes it as the only complete part of any of Ripon’s medieval hospitals to survive from the time of its foundation. Today it is Grade I listed.
