Norton Conyers House and Gardens

Norton Conyers House and Gardens Norton Conyers, house and garden, have belonged to the Graham family since 1624. It was the Winner of the 2014 HHA & Sothebys Restoration Award.

The Graham family had important connections with the Stuart family; both Charles I and James II stayed here. Many visitors have remarked upon its notably friendly atmosphere which we believe, results from so many years of occupation by the same family. Another famous visitor was Charlotte Bronte who stayed at Norton Conyers in 1839. The discovery in 2004 of a blocked staircase connecting the first

floor to the attics and clearly mentioned in the novel, aroused world-wide interest in Norton Conyers and confirmed it as a principal inspiration for 'Thornfield Hall'. It was the Winner of the 2014 Historic Houses Association(HHA) & Sothebys Restoration Award.

Admission to the gardens £6.00 per person.

Norton Conyers House (and walled garden) open this week, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. House tours start on the hour 1pm-2pm-3pm. Explore the house, grounds and walled garden and hear about the fascinating history of the Graham family. The house is said to be one of the inspirations for Charlotte Brontë’s ‘Jane Eyre’. The curtains in the parlour room at Norton Conyers house have been repaired and cleaned.
We placed them back this week just in time for the house opening this coming Bank Holiday weekend. The house is open to visitors Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday afternoon. Guided tours start on hour 1pm-2pm-3pm.
