Felicity Cunliffe-Lister, the co-owner of Swinton Estate and the architect behind the Luminesce Trail, said: "We welcomed over 8000 guests last year during our first season and this year promises even more than before for guests staying on the Estate or visiting for the day. This brings the dark winters evenings to life – we’re really looking forward to it.”

The trail will run from October 31, 2026, to February 21, 2027, and will be open every Saturday and Sunday, as well as daily during the Christmas and February school holidays.

Tickets are priced at £19 for adults and £11 for children during peak periods, with off-peak tickets costing £17 for adults and £7.50 for children.

Admission is free for children under five.

Dogs are welcome on the trail but must be kept on leads.

Harmby Waterfall - a hidden gem near Leyburn and just 10 miles from Masham.

I love Colsterdale Tower for lots of reasons, not least because the first time you see it your immediate reaction is: what on earth is that doing there?

This strange, almost unnecessarily handsome stone structure is actually a surveying tower, built in 1903 for Harrogate Corporation. Around 14 metres high, it was one of three towers used by engineers to accurately align the three-mile Carlesmoor Aqueduct tunnel, driven beneath Masham Moor to carry water from Roundhill Reservoir towards Harrogate. The tunnel was completed in 1908 and the water scheme was operating by 1911.

That’s what makes it brilliant to me. Somebody needed a fixed point for surveying a water tunnel and, rather than sticking up a pole, they built this - two great buttressed stone piers rising out of the moor like some peculiar Victorian monument. And the engineering it helped create gave us Roundhill and the wider reservoir landscape around Colsterdale, those great flashes of blue amongst the moors on the right day.

Completely practical. Completely unnecessary-looking. And absolutely wonderful.
