On the evening of Friday 12 June 2026, the Cuilfail Tunnel was closed for routine maintenance - however this closure was slightly different. Working in partnership with East Sussex Fire and Rescue, a planned safety exercise was carried out.

During the exercise, firefighters responded to simulated reports of a collision and vehicle fire, providing crews with a valuable opportunity to practise their response in a realistic setting.

Training exercises like this play an important role in ensuring emergency services are prepared for real-life incidents and can respond quickly and safely - as well making sure our teams know exactly what to do if an emergency ever arises. Fire crews were on site until around 9pm, and nearby residents were thanked for their patience and understanding, with apologies for any noise disruption.

🚧 Improvements in Devonshire Place completed 🚧

The project involved replacing the worn road surface and installing a reinforcement grid to help strengthen and protect it for the future.

These works were delivered within an accelerated timeframe to improve surface quality ahead of the busy summer months. To minimise disruption, the scheme was carried out in two distinct phases - northbound and southbound - with works taking place both day and night, enabling completion of these essential repairs within just one week.

Despite periods of heavy rain causing early pauses at the start of the week, the road was successfully reopened as planned on 5 June. We would like to thank residents for their patience and understanding while these works were carried out.

⚓Behind the scenes at Newhaven Swing Bridge – more than just a crossing⚓

This month, we’re shining a light on the different types of structures we maintain across East Sussex - from parapets and railings to bridges, tunnels and other specialist assets that help keep people moving safely around the county. Each week, we’ll be focusing on a different part of this work and sharing a closer look at the repairs, inspections and maintenance that often happen behind the scenes but play an important role in everyday journeys.

This week, we’re putting the spotlight on one of East Sussex’s most recognisable structures – Newhaven Swing Bridge.

Opened in November 1974, the bridge carries the A259 across the River Ouse, connecting communities, businesses and visitors along the Sussex coast. It also plays a key role in supporting access to Newhaven Port.

Unlike a standard bridge, it can open for river traffic - and because vessels have priority, the bridge opens whenever boats need to pass. These openings are carefully timed around high tide, so vessels can travel safely without grounding on the riverbed and can happen up to three times per tide.

Behind the scenes, keeping the bridge running smoothly is a team effort involving several specialist disciplines. Civil engineering teams look after the structure itself, including the bridge deck, carriageway, footways and parapets. Mechanical components are maintained to ensure the bridge can lift and turn reliably, while electrical systems control everything from road signals to navigation lights and the operation of the bridge.

Working closely with the Port Authority, our teams carry out regular maintenance, inspections and fault-finding, responding quickly when needed to help minimise disruption.

It’s a great example of the varied and highly skilled work our structures team carries out to keep East Sussex moving safely every day.

Shinewater Bridge has been part of Eastbourne’s daily life since 1999, carrying more than thirty-four thousand journeys in and out of the town every single day. For most people, it’s just a quick moment in their drive - but behind the scenes, it’s a vital structure keeping the area moving.

Over time, like anything that works hard every day, parts of the bridge have started to wear out. So, we’re carrying out essential maintenance to keep it in top condition and ready for the future.

To keep things moving for road users, most of our work will take place out of sight, underneath the bridge. That means the road can stay open, with a 40mph speed limit in place so we can work safely, while footpaths and cycle routes remain available for everyday journeys.

Later this year, we’ll carefully lift the bridge by just a few millimetres - about the width of a coin - so we can remove and replace key components that help the structure move safely. Once the new parts are in place, we’ll lower the bridge back down and the bridge will be strong for years to come.

We’re also taking extra care of the environment around the bridge, working closely with ecologists to protect local wildlife and habitats throughout the project.

This work might not always be visible, but it’s an important investment in keeping Eastbourne connected - safely and reliably - for the long term.
