🌟 A huge congratulations to Rada, our Contract Improvement Team Leader, for being shortlisted for the Community Leaders Award at the Highways Awards!

Rada was nominated by Corporate Parenting Board Manager, Karen Basmajian (CFLL), following their joint working on a social value project funded by Yunex (SCC’s traffic lights contractor) to provide financial literacy training for care leavers.

The project has opened doors to career insights and hands-on experiences through Surrey's Highways Alliance, helping care-experienced young people explore future employment opportunities

By connecting partners and championing opportunities for young people, Rada unlocked a high quality, targeted programme that supports care leavers to develop financial skills, budgeting confidence and an understanding of how to manage day-to-day living costs as they move into independence.

Rada's nomination highlights the power of partnership working. By connecting Corporate Parenting, Yunex and Surrey's Highways Alliance, she helped create valuable opportunities for care leavers! A fantastic and well-deserved achievement. 👏

Meet Laura Merrick, one of Surrey Family Learning's experienced Parenting Tutors. With over 13 years of experience in education as a former primary school teacher, Laura is passionate about supporting parents and carers to help children thrive both at home and at school. Alongside her tutoring role, she works as a Home School Link Worker and is currently training to become a counsellor.

Laura has designed and delivered a wide range of successful parenting courses and workshops across Surrey, helping families build confidence, resilience and positive relationships. Her areas of expertise include child anxiety, emotional regulation, self-esteem, concentration, behaviour strategies, friendships, bedtime routines and understanding masking.

Drawing on her extensive experience working with children, families, schools and support services, Laura shares practical, evidence-informed strategies that parents and carers can use in everyday family life. Her warm and supportive approach helps learners feel understood, empowered and more confident in navigating the challenges of parenting.

After joining us straight from university, Aoibhinn has quickly settled into her new role thanks to the support, training and encouragement from her team. Aoibhinn reflects below on her experiences of joining our Children’s Residential Service:

💬 “Everyone I’ve met throughout the process has been incredibly supportive and welcoming. The training has really helped me prepare for the role and made my first month much smoother. During my shadowing period, the team has been amazing in showing me everything I need to know and helping me build my confidence. It’s a challenging job at times, but both the staff and young people have made coming in every day something I genuinely look forward to”.

Another fantastic Surrey Public Sector Challenge completed! 🌟

We joined forces once again with Reigate & Banstead Borough Council and Elmbridge Borough Council for the second Surrey Public Sector Challenge! 👟

The walk was a huge success and brought teams together for a meaningful cause, all while enjoying the beautiful Surrey countryside. A huge well done to everyone who took part to raise funds for Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation. 👏

🎉 Congratulations to our fantastic Epsom Hospital Social Care Team on being recognised at the GESH Care Awards!

Working alongside the Transfer of Care Hub (TOCH), the team was shortlisted for the Collaborative Award, celebrating the partnership partnership work to help people leave hospital safely. Where practical and safe to do so, initial assessments and discharge plans take place in people’s homes so they can return home as quickly as possible and continue their recovery with a tailored support plan in place.

Representing the team at the awards were Linda McLennan, Senior Manager, and Sean McDonough, Hospital Team Manager. While they didn't take home the final award, being named as one of the finalists is a wonderful recognition and a testament to the team's hard work and the positive difference the TOCH is making on residents across Surrey. 👏

🌟 Tutor Spotlight: Melanie Han ✍️

Meet Melanie Han, one of our Creative Writing tutors.

With a PhD in Creative Writing and a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, Melanie has taught English and Creative Writing across a range of settings, including university courses and workshops with organisations such as The Poetry School and Writing Workshops. As the author of five poetry collections, she understands the challenges and rewards of developing a writing practice and enjoys helping others discover their own creative voice.

Melanie's classes are welcoming, supportive and designed to build confidence. A typical session includes warm-up writing activities, reading and discussing examples of creative work, and plenty of time to write. Learners are encouraged to share their work, exchange ideas and receive constructive feedback in a friendly environment.

One learner returned to creative writing after many years away, feeling nervous about starting again. During the course, she gained the confidence to explore aspects of her identity through her writing and said she would never have approached those topics without the encouragement and sense of safety she found within the group. By the final session, she said she was "not ready for it to end" and felt the experience had helped her overcome her fear of creative writing.

"Every writer starts somewhere. You do not need prior experience, just curiosity and a willingness to explore."

Whether you are completely new to creative writing or looking to develop existing skills, Melanie's courses offer a welcoming space to learn, experiment and grow.
