It was a great start to my term as Deputy Mayor to join members of African Community in Surrey and Sussex for their Africa Day Celebration in Horley last week.
Events such as this are a wonderful reminder of the richness that diversity brings to our communities. Across Surrey, Sussex and beyond, people of African heritage make an enormous contribution to our society, our economy, our culture and our public life. Africa Day is an opportunity not only to celebrate those contributions, but also to celebrate the values that unite us all: family, community, friendship, opportunity and mutual respect.
One of the greatest strengths of our borough is that people from different backgrounds, cultures and experiences can come together, learn from one another, and build stronger communities. Organisations such as Africa Community in Surrey and Sussex play a vital role in making that happen. Through their work, members create connections, provide support, preserve cultural heritage and help ensure that everyone feels valued and included.
As a Councillor, and now as Deputy Mayor, I have the privilege of meeting people from many different walks of life, and I am continually inspired by the dedication of volunteers, community leaders and local residents who work tirelessly to make our communities better places to live. The work celebrated in Horley on Sunday was a shining example of that spirit. It was really lovely to also have the opportunity to meet representatives from organisations Include, YMCA, the Woodland Trust and Mother’s Hope - all of which do incredible work across our local area.
I wish Africa Community Surrey and Sussex every success for the future and look forward to seeing the organisation continue to flourish in the years ahead.
