'The Salt King’ is the latest novel by Natasha Pulley, author of ‘The Watchmaker of Filigree Street’. Described as a creepy fusion of folk horror with biblical lore, it tells the story of Avelyn Brocken, a Jesuit at the Vatican who is forced to return to his hometown of Hreodwater in East Anglia, after rumours spread of miracles being performed.

Hreodwater is a salt mine town that has its own culture, its own language, and its own faith - the worship of the Salt King, the sleeping god of the mine.

With people being turned into salt statues without warning and salt eruptions happening all over the world, if these are miracles, then the church must do something.

If you want to make these -

4oz of sunflower spread
7oz soft brown sugar
2 eggs or egg replacer to be vegan
Generous shake of ground sweet cinnamon
2 finely chopped dessert apples
8oz self raising flour
Milk or alternative to mix to a soft consistency

Cook at 180C for approximately 15-20 minutes
