Today we were planting bluebells to supplement those already on site and to complement the snowdrops, crocuses and ransomes we have planted in the last few years.

We also cut back the brambles, hedges and self sets, mainly to the west of the Moat. There was very little litter to deal with today.

Before we could start planting bluebells this morning a couple of us had the unenviable task of clearing dog poo. The first photo is what I picked up in one small area 🙁 We’re here until lunchtime if you would like to come and do something more enjoyable!

A reminder to everyone that we’re at the moat today. It is dry and not windy today but is still soggy underfoot so wear wellies if you come down. Pete is assessing what trees and watercourses need attention after all the wind and rain and rubbish has been blown around. If you can come down for half an hour or so there are non strenuous jobs 😊

It was a lovely day to be outside today and we got a lot done with the help of our volunteers. 1,500 crocus bulbs planted on the south of the moat near the bench, small areas along the south, west and north and a sweeping area to the north. We also spread some wildflower seeds in the meadow of species we haven’t already got.

I hope that our new volunteers all enjoyed it and that Alexander’s teacher appreciates the photos of a spider and wood louse on my hand that he took for his homework about mini beasts!

Today we struggled to clear some reeds because the mud wanted to drag us in - or at least give us a light coating! There was more wood management on the island but I couldn’t get good photos of that. Already looking forward to less messy work next month 😆

Yesterday we were told of a sighting of SEVEN egrets at the Moat. Whilst there have been sightings of one or two previously this sighting implies a successful family group 😊 Photos were taken from a distance so there are arrows to help you spot them!
