Dear Ben
Open Letter
These are the views of Philip Chisholm.
It is wonderful to see the study being implemented for the Tees Tunnel. This will integrate the value of the south side of the Tees with that of the North, and the 60-90 minute car journey from Hartlepool Teessworks will be reduced.
Please could I ask you, as part of the commissioned one million pound study, to include the option of an electric cycle and pedestrian tunnel
from Hartlepool to the back of the old Redcar Blast Furnace site.
Such a build-in structure involves two concrete islands on either side of the Teess Shipping channel with suspension bridges from the land. The two Cycle tunnels would only be short, 150 meters each. The islands would include stairs and a lift. The stairs would have a cycle gutter for the wheels beside the way up/down to supplement lift outages.
This ‘Green' approach is energised by bus parking on either side of the tunnel entrance, with car parking and cycle routes ticking all the ecological boxes.
On top of the North Island will be a cafe and Seal Sands viewing platform for wildlife: seals, birds and marsh life.
This idea was founded upon the inspiration of opportunity by opening the Hartlepool unemployment workforce (the highest in the UK) to Teesworks at a very economically achievable cost.
Suppose you consider the infrastructure cost of roads to and from a Motorway tunnel instead of the cycle/pedestrian tunnel. Multi millions instead of a few million for cycle tracks. Communication is the key.
Furthermore, the tunnelling machine required to achieve the Tees Cycle tunnel has just about finished its job, creating the tunnel from Tees Port to York Potash.
This additional short tunnel job would provide work for the dismantlers who are about to "retire" the machine. If this option is not considered now, an environmentally damaging ESTUARY ROAD may well get the go-ahead ahead of an ecological one.
I am available to discuss this further at your convenience.
Thank you for your consideration.
Best regards,
Philip Chisholm
