We’re really proud to share that our Haematology team at Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust has received a national award from 👏

The award recognises outstanding person-centred care and clinical innovation, and honours the legacy of Clinical Nurse Specialist Sarah Henshaw.

Our team was recognised for putting patients at the heart of everything they do. Highlights include:

▪️Bringing clinicians and patient representatives together to improve care across every stage of the pathway
▪️Working closely with patients and the Reading Myeloma Support Group to create a twice-yearly newsletter
▪️Developing a comprehensive programme to support patients before and after stem cell transplantation

Dr Pratap Neelakantan, Consultant Haematologist, said:
“We are incredibly proud to receive this award. It reflects the dedication and compassion of our whole team.”

Congratulations to the entire team for this well-deserved recognition 💙

💙 Every year we say a heartfelt thank you to our 300+ volunteers who support our staff to deliver high quality care to our patients and visitors.

As they do every year, our Chair and executive team hosted a special dinner for the volunteers who support a whole range of services across the Trust. Take a look here at some of the fantastic things they do for us all:

🛻 25 Buggy Drivers
👋 30 Welcome desk volunteers
🫂 20 Patient companions
☕ 25 Emergency department tea-trolley volunteers
💊 12 Pharmacy volunteers
🌟10 Berkshire Cancer Centre Volunteers
💙 30 Ward helpers

The annual dinner welcomed a special guest this year – Berkshire’s Lord Lieutenant Mr Andrew Try who also donned catering gear and helped serve the food in the Royal Berkshire Hospital restaurant and prepared by the Trust’s award winning catering team.

Mr Try spoke of the vital role played by volunteers and the gratitude we all owe to them for dedicating that most precious thing – their time – to helping others.

We love to celebrate our fantastic colleagues and recognise the amazing work they do with our StarCard awards.✨💫

Each month, colleagues can nominated their peers who go above and beyond and winners will be presented with an award.

Oke, Trust Chair, had the pleasure of meeting Jawwad, Noma and Eleanor, to present their StarCard awards. Each of them had made a huge difference to their patients and were recognised for their outstanding care.

Many congratulations to our StarCard winners! 🌟

We are proud to celebrate the start of Volunteers’ Week by recognising the extraordinary contribution made by our dedicated team of volunteers whose time and commitment make a meaningful difference to patients, visitors and staff across the organisation.

With more than 400 active volunteers, we benefit from their wide range of skills, and experiences. And in the last year alone, our volunteers have gifted tens of thousands of hours, supporting services and helping to enhance the experience patients have when visiting.

From welcoming patients and guiding visitors around the site, to providing companionship on wards, and delivering essential items across departments, they play a vital role in keeping things running smoothly.

This year’s Volunteer’ Week celebrations also coincide with the arrival of 50 new wheelchairs, funded in part by the Royal Berks Charity and the dedicated efforts of the volunteers themselves through initiatives such as the sale of handmade goods.

Sukhi Sidhu, Voluntary Services Manager at the Trust said:
“Our volunteers generosity, kindness and willingness to give their time makes a huge difference to us and our patients. Whether they are offering directions, sitting with someone who needs company, or raising much-needed funds, their contribution cannot be overstated.

"The new wheelchairs are a fantastic example of how volunteer efforts translate into tangible benefits for our hospital community. We are incredibly grateful to each and every one of our volunteers.”

🌟 Meet James, our Chief Executive 🌟

Hi I’m James, and I have been Chief Executive Officer at the Trust for just over two weeks now. The NHS is a thread that runs through my whole family and shapes some of my earliest memories. I grew up in Preston and, when I was four, my mum resumed her career at our local Trust as a ward clerk, spending the rest of her working life in the NHS. I also have several other relatives in clinical roles, and my wife is a doctor at another Trust.

At university I ran a college sports club which gave me my first real experience of leading a team, and the importance of looking after people and taking them with you. And in the summer breaks I returned to the local hospital in an admin role to help fund my time at university.

When I was thinking of what to do next, the NHS was a natural step and I joined the graduate trainee programme – including coming to the Royal Berks. It’s changed a lot since I was here – back then Battle Block was just opening – and it was surreal walking through the same corridors now. So far, I’m finding it a lovely mix of a new challenge and a sense of familiarity.

I live in Surrey with my wife and two boys. They couldn’t be more different – the older one is passionate about trains, whilst I’ve spent much of the winter by the side of a rugby pitch with the younger one. I’m also a runner and a couple of years ago I ran the 62 miles from London to Brighton for charity.

In terms of my initial focus, there are several areas I’m passionate about. This includes making better use of data to inform our decision making; how we can make sure we are ready to use tech like AI in a way that helps us be more effective; partnership working in the local NHS so we join up care and better anticipate the health needs of local people; and of course how we can make our current estate work for us while we continue to push towards a new hospital in the longer term.

I want to thank the colleagues I’ve met already for the warm welcome. I’m excited to find out more about the great work that’s happening here and find ways to build on the incredibly strong position we are already in.

As we mark the start of Pride Month today, we celebrate the diversity that makes our Trust a strong, compassionate place. We are proud to be an open, inclusive organisation where colleagues, patients and visitors can feel welcomed and valued for who they are.
