This week is Volunteers Week and a chance to celebrate the incredible efforts of our volunteers over the past year.

All across Berkshire, our dedicated volunteers support crews and our staff at events, raising awareness of the Service, supporting our Cadets and helping to keep people safe

Our volunteers give their time to help their communities safe and we are tremendously thankful for all the work they do.

To commemorate Volunteers Week this year, Volunteers and staff alike gathered at Service Headquarters on Monday, 1 June for a Volunteers Celebration Event. Here, we were able to say thank you to all of our fantastic volunteers and show our appreciation for their incredible work!

If you are interested in becoming a Volunteer with the Service, please visit our website for more information: https://ow.ly/L4CJ50Sbymf

Do Your Part to Keep Berkshire Safe This Summer

We're reminding residents to take extra care when enjoying the great outdoors and do their part to stop outdoor fires.

Out and About:
🌳Always extinguish ci******es and other smoking materials properly – never throw lit cigarette ends out of car windows as they can destroy whole fields of crops.
🌳Avoid having open fires in the countryside. Only use barbecues in safe, designated areas and never leave them unattended.
🌳Never leave bottles or glass lying around – sunlight shining through can start a fire.

We are continuing to work with partners at the scene of the recent incident at the Daler-Rowney site in Bracknell.

Residents in the area may notice fire and rescue service vehicles attending the site to monitor for any hotspots and damp down where required.

We are also part of multi-agency partnership meetings led by Bracknell Forest Council, to help the local community recover from the impact of the incident.

Thank you for your continued support and patience.

Our previous updates can be found on our website:
https://www.rbfrs.co.uk/incidents/industrial-building-fire/large-industrial-fire-bracknell/

Update on the Daler-Rowney fire - we are now focusing on recovery and working with various organisations to support the local community, residents who were affected, and assess the environmental impact.

Today we visited in the region of 100 properties and identified those homes where specialist cleaning is required. Following our visits and inspections, we have found the impact is limited to properties very close to the source of the fire.

We are now working with a specialist contractor to arrange the appropriate clean up. It is anticipated that the contractors will commence this work over the weekend, setting up a base in Browning Copse.

As a precaution, we have closed the children’s play area in Browning Copse until the necessary cleaning has been completed.

Residents who have already collected debris, should not place this debris with their general waste, as it will be collected by the contractors. Please keep this double bagged and separate from bin collection material.

Today (31 May) is the last day of Boat Fire Safety Week, and we have some more advice to help you stay safe.

What To Do if There's a Fire:
🔥Do not enter a smoke filled space.
🔥If you are already in a smoke filled space keep low down where the air is clearer.
🔥Starve the fire of air. Don’t open engine hatches or doors unless you have to.
🔥If you are inland or moored near to land, move everybody off the boat and call 999 immediately.

Get Out, Stay Out, Call 999 – It Doesn’t Need to Be a Great Escape

5. What to Do if Your Escape is Blocked
🏠If you can’t escape, you will need to find a room to take refuge in – this is particularly important if you have difficult moving around or going downstairs on your own.
🏠Try to find a room that has a window and a phone.
🏠Put bedding around the bottom of the door to block smoke.

Would you know what to do if you find someone in trouble in the water?

🌊Cold water shock refers to the reaction of the body to entering cold water – breathing in water, weakening your muscles, and even causing your heart to go into abnormal rhythms.
🌊If you find yourself in trouble in the water, float to live – try not to panic and float on your back until the cold water shock passes.
🌊If you see someone in trouble in the water, call 999 straight away and ask to speak to the fire service and ambulance.
🌊Never enter the water to try and save them, even if you are a strong swimmer.
🌊Instead, shout to the person "Swim to me!" to give them focus in their surroundings.
🌊If there are lifebelts or throw lines nearby – use them!

Watch our video to learn more about water rescue throw lines and how to use them in an emergency.
