Carers Week: Support and events

Carers Week is returning from 8 to 14 June, helping to recognise unpaid carers and connect people with support across the borough.

Thousands of people in Wokingham Borough look after a family member, friend or neighbour. They might not think of themselves as 'carers' and instead see it as just helping someone they care about. But support is available for anyone in this role.

There will be drop-in sessions, social activities and information events throughout the week. Carers Week is a great chance to get support, learn new things and connect with others who understand.

Events are being organised by Age UK Berkshire, Promise Inclusion, Berkshire Youth and Wokingham Carers Partnership.

For more information email [email protected] or call 0118 959 4242.

Schools to take action for Clean Air Day ☁

Local primary schools in the Wokingham Borough are gearing up for Clean Air Day on 18 June, with an exciting programme of activities run by Wokingham Borough Council My Journey team and Volker Highways.

Pupils will take part in interactive assemblies and hands-on sessions to learn about air pollution and the impact of vehicle emissions on their health and environment.

A borough-wide anti-idling competition is also launching, inviting children to design bold posters encouraging drivers to switch off engines outside schools.

Winning designs will be turned into professional banners and displayed at school gates, helping spread the message to the wider community.

Walking group trial could become regular fixture 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️

Wokingham Borough Council conducted a six-week trial of Nordic walking at Langley Mead in Shinfield, Hazebrouck Meadows in Arborfield and Dinton Pastures Country Park near Hurst.

It's been well received with great feedback from participants, who say they've seen the physical and mental benefits and feel more confident enjoying regular activity.

They are looking to set up a regular Nordic walking group and have asked people who attended their trial for their ideas.

If you'd like to join in, please email: [email protected]

National Volunteers' Week - Get involved locally 😃

The first week of June marks National Volunteers’ Week, a chance to thank volunteers, celebrate their impact and inspire more people to get involved.

Wokingham Volunteer Centre - https://wokinghamvolunteercentre.org.uk/ -supports local charities to recruit volunteers and helps residents find the right role. From helping a child read and chatting to an isolated older person, to supporting community groups, sorting donations, driving to medical appointments or helping with shopping, there is something for everyone.

“It really does change people’s lives; both those who volunteer and those who are helped by volunteers," said Helena Badger, Volunteer Services Manager. "Volunteering can help you gain new skills, meet new people, test the water for a career change, allow you to give something back and help a cause you really believe in.”

Mary, a volunteer driver with the Earley Transport Scheme, added: “I didn’t realise how rewarding and fulfilling it would be. It is so much more than taking an elderly person to a vital appointment, it is a chance to listen to them and hear their incredible stories. It is invaluable for both of us!”

To get involved, visit the volunteer portal to view local opportunities - https://volunteerwokinghamborough.org.uk/ - alternatively, contact Wokingham Volunteer Centre by emailing [email protected] or calling 0118 977 0749.

Helping residents feel safe and supported 🫂

A network of Safe Places is relaunching across Wokingham Borough to help residents feel more confident and supported when out and about.

Fourteen shops, businesses, leisure centres and libraries have signed up so far, offering a safe place for anyone who may feel lost, anxious or in need of support while in the community.

Staff can help with directions, contacting a trusted person or providing somewhere quiet to wait.

Look out for the Safe Places sticker in venue windows or use the Safe Places app to find your nearest location. Find out more here: https://www.wokingham.gov.uk/news/2026/safe-places-scheme-returns-support-residents-across-borough

Residents can also carry a free Safe Places Card with emergency contact details and important information.

Businesses interested in joining the scheme can email [email protected] to find out more.
