In this week's East Lothian Courier column, I write about the cuts that the Scottish Government has made to our local services in East Lothian.

Our council has lost out on more than £50 million over the past decade, as a result of the Scottish Government's decisions.

That means it is now the third-wor­st ­fun­ded coun­cil per head of pop­u­la­tion in Scot­land, des­pite also being the second­ fast­est-grow­ing coun­cil area. I have called for an urgent focus on empower­ing local com­munit­ies and secur­ing fair resources for coun­cils across Scot­land.

Labour's Employment Rights Act 2025 has made life better and workplaces safer for people across East Lothian as it is rolled out.

The law ends exploitative zero-hours contracts and unscrupulous ‘fire and rehire’ practices, grants paternity leave, unpaid parental and bereavement leave from day one of employment, and strengthens protections against unfair dismissal.

We are transforming workplace law for the 21st century, making work as fair as it should be.
