We are absolutely gutted that Portsmouth has not been shortlisted for City of Culture 2029. We believed in this bid and in everything it represents for our great city, so this is a hugely disappointing outcome.

Regardless of the news, we respect the independent panel’s decision and know the city's bid has already restored a real sense of pride and belonging in the place we call home. With local people, artists, community groups and cultural organisations coming together to show what makes Portsmouth so special it was our privilege to fire the starting gun for the process.

We would like to pay particular tribute to the team at Portsmouth Creates for their hard work, passion and commitment throughout the bid process, doing justice to our city's incredible story.

We know that our community will continue to take pride in our maritime heritage and history, our artists and strong community spirit. We share this pride in Portsmouth and that is why we backed this bid every step of the way.

Farage claims you can’t vet candidates for comments they might make in the future. But that misses the point.

Chris Parry was making racist statements before Reform selected him as its mayoral candidate for our region. He then used the platform that came with his candidacy to amplify those views. Farage’s own officials reportedly raised concerns, yet Farage wanted to keep him as the candidate.

This wasn’t about predicting future behaviour. It was about how the party responded to evidence that was already available.

The accusation isn’t simply that Reform attracts people who make racist statements. It’s that, when confronted with evidence of a candidate’s conduct, its leadership was prepared to keep him as its representative. That raises a serious question: is Reform merely failing to screen out such candidates, or is its leadership willing to tolerate and legitimise their views when it suits the party?

You can’t dismiss concerns about what a candidate has already said by claiming nobody can predict the future.

It's been another busy weekend for the Pompey Labour teams across Portsmouth! Here are just a few of the things we've been up to:

🗑️ Another successful litter pick in Cosham with Asghar Shah and the team! Every month, Shah hosts a litter pick in the area to help put pride back into where we live.

🗞️ Matthew Holland and team delivering our new Pompey Matters newsletter across the city, keeping residents updated on the work we're doing locally and in Parliament.

🎖️ Our MP’s Amanda Martin MP and Stephen Morgan MP attended the National Cadet Week event at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

🚪 Josh Constable and team speaking to residents in Baffins about the issues that matter to them and reporting back on the actions we've taken on their behalf.

🌈 Robin Head volunteering with National Education Union stall at the Portsmouth Pride community event at the Guildhall!
