Portsmouth Mediation And Assessment Service

Portsmouth Mediation And Assessment Service PMAS is a registered community charity that works tirelessly to resolve disputes and conflict within Portsmouth and the surrounding area.

Portsmouth Assessment Service was established in 1996 as a registered community charity, and has worked tirelessly to resolve disputes and conflict within Portsmouth and the surrounding area. We strongly believe that your quality of life, at home and in your community, should not be compromised by dispute or conflict. We use Mediation, a form of alternative dispute resolution in which impartial Me

diators listen to the concerns of the parties involved and then empower them to explore ways forward. The outcomes are surprisingly successful and generally less stressful than other options. In addition to this, we also offer Restorative Justice services and seek to promote Portsmouth as a 'Restorative City'. We welcome enquiries from members of the general public, businesses and organisations who may benefit from our many years of Mediation experience.

Welcome to the opportunity to contribute to a special collection of 100 restorative stories from across Portsmouth.

This exciting initiative forms part of the city’s 100-year celebration and is being led by Portsmouth Mediation Service, which is also celebrating its 30th anniversary.

We are inviting stories and images from anyone with an inspiring example of relational and restorative practice—whether from your workplace, home, or community.

This unique project has grown out of the Relational & Restorative Practice Community of Inquiry, supported by Portsmouth City Council, the University of Portsmouth, and members of the voluntary and community sector.

Initially, the stories and images will be displayed on this page. However, in the coming weeks and months, we hope to bring these powerful, vision-inspiring stories to life in new and creative ways—potentially showcasing them on buildings and walls across Portsmouth. We are also exploring other innovative formats, such as “liquid books.”

A huge thank you to our local Portsmouth Police
Such a Beautiful part of Portsmouth and so sad to see a minority spoiling things. Important also to appreciate and thank those young visitors who do respect the local community.

It was so good for Steve & Sue to help train the University of Portsmouth Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) class in the power of Restorative Listening Circles. We always say that when you need Mediation or ADR the situation has already gone too far. Restorative Circles help people to understand each other.

During Mental Health Awareness Week (11–17 May), the call is not just to raise awareness, but to take action that genuinely supports people’s wellbeing.
Solent Restorative Partnership, a restorative skills and mediation practice based in Wi******er, is hosting a FREE half‑day wellbeing event that focuses on practical actions which protect mental health and support sustainable performance.

In our restorative and workplace culture work, we see that performance is rarely a skills issue — it is a wellbeing and relationship issue. Stress and emotional overload fuel conflict and disengagement, while regulated, supported individuals communicate more effectively, resolve differences constructively and perform better together.
When wellbeing is actively supported, people are more present, resilient and effective.

“Wellbeing isn’t separate from productivity — it’s the foundation performance is built on.”
— Hannah Playfoot-Murray

This event is for HR professionals, managers, leaders and anyone invested in people — those who understand that caring about mental health is central to our relationships and our ability to thrive in the workplace, and beyond.

If you would like to attend or share this invitation, we would be delighted to welcome you.
Please contact Lili Boyanova Hugh at [email protected] or [email protected] to book your place. Places are limited and are allocated on first come first serve basis.

On 9 April 1991, the trawler Wilhelmina J set out from Old Portsmouth to trawl for scallops in the English Channel. Shortly before 2am on 10 April, in thick fog off the Sussex coast, the boat was struck by the Zulfikar, a Cypriot cargo vessel. She went down with the loss of six lives, all men in their 20s and 30s: Jeff Alan Venters, Michael James Bell, Mark Warwick Fitz, Christopher Clifford Thomas, Guy Ransom Davies and Matthew James Hodge.

There is on the Corner of the Camber a memorial stone and on Sunday the 10th May at 2.30pm there will be a service of remembrance and reflection. All are welcome.

We are grateful to Dr Andrii Zharikov a Senior Lecturer at the University of Portsmouth (Faculty of Business and Law) for inviting our service manager Steve to deliver a guest lecture to his class of LLM postgraduate students studying Alternative Dispute Resolution.
Steve presented the Restorative vision for Portsmouth and the principles that underpin it. Restorative Justice & Practice are not included in the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) module and the topic generated some fresh thinking among the students.
Steve also offered to provide training for those students who wanted a greater understanding of Restorative Practice. Dr Zharikov said afterwards “we are grateful to Portsmouth Mediation Service, the students were clearly inspired by the talk and ideas and have started a register for those who are interested in the restorative training”
