We’ve enjoyed sharing the images from the Sheila Urquhart Collection, today we’ll share a little about the lady herself.
Sheila Urquhart was a much loved primary school teacher, born in Shetland, whose family later moved to Orkney and then to Portree where her father was Postmaster. They lived above the Post Office (now the Backpackers Hostel). She completed her schooling in Portree before training as a teacher in Edinburgh and Stirling.
Returning to Skye, she married Roddie Urquhart, a joiner, and together they formed Roddie Urquhart’s Scottish Dance Band, performing locally with accordion and piano. They lived at Braeside Cottage in Bernisdale, and Sheila taught Primary One at Portree School.
Keenly interested in photography, she documented local life using her Rolleiflex camera, developing prints at home and later selling them to newspapers. After moving to Inverness, she continued teaching, eventually becoming Deputy Head of Infants at Drakies Primary School.
Music remained a constant throughout her life. In Inverness, Sheila and Roddie established the Glenbern Trio, performing at weddings and dances for many years. In her later years, Sheila expanded her musical talents further by teaching herself not only to play the fiddle but also to make them. She also completed a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Music at Highland College.

Thank you all so much for all your help with the Sheila Urquhart Photographic Collection over this last week, we’ve been delighted to get so many names. We will have the exhibition up for a few weeks yet if anyone would like to come and visit us. It would be lovely to get as many names as possible.
This is a colour image of a primary school class, we only have a few colour images so maybe was taken in the late 1960’s?

Best wishes to everyone taking part in the Skye Half Marathon 13.1 miles, 10K and Fun Run 1.67 miles tomorrow.
I’m not sure if it’s a marathon or cross country but this group of school children are looking eager to be off and running. Could this be the back of the original school? Image by Sheila Urquhart c.1960s

🥳 We've added a few extra tickets online and there will be a few on the door.

We are all really looking forward to this special evening talk tonight at Portree Community Centre with Dr Margaret Bennett. (link for tickets below, this event is free or pay what you can)
Cutting-edge, steeped in tradition, innovative and inspirational, Martyn Bennett came from a long line of Skye tradition-bearers. Piper, fiddler, composer, endless experimenter, he was one of Scotland's most prodigiously gifted and beloved musicians until his untimely death at the age of 33. This celebration of his life, his work and spirit is introduced by Martyn's mother, singer, folklorist and author Margaret Bennett, who shares a collection of photographs, memories and music as well as previously unreleased recordings. A rare chance to hear and see other facets of Martyn's character and musicianship, including a Paganini duet played by Martyn and the inimitable Hester Dickson.
Learn more about his family's connection to Skye through photographs, stories, and more. This is one not to be missed!

“Martyn was the boy who did it first and who did it best—the ultimate fusion of traditional roots and contemporary grooves, whose daring, humour, imagination and sheer ability set his music head and shoulders above the rest… a true musician and a beautiful soul.” - Maryann Kennedy.
