Winter is coming🌨️❄️☃️⛄️

Good morning,
If you like the idea of proper winter weather, you might be in for a treat.
From New Year's day onwards there is a high chance of very wintry weather with frequent snow showers and strong northerly winds for at least one week.
It is still unclear, how much snow will fall and if it will be cold enough for the snow to stay close to the shore, but there is a good chance for 10-20cm of snow even in Portgordon by mid of next week.
The northwesterly winds on Thursday will reach up to 55mph and that will cause serious snow drifts on all inland roads.

Update 30/12/2025 13:00:
-----------------------------
Due to the spring tide this weekend and the wind direction and long fetch, there will be very high waves (3m) coming in from the north.
This may cause some serious overtopping along Stewart St. and Lennox Pl.
Please take some precautions in that area.

So reconsider any travel plans from Thursday onwards and stay safe.

Gale/Storm warning for tonight and tomorrow (9-10/12/2025):
----------------------------------------------------------------------

A period of wet and very windy is coming in right now and the rain is just about to start.
This evening the south to southwesterly winds will increase up to 60mph and it will remain that windy until tomorrow afternoon.
Due to the wind direction, high waves and overtopping are less likely.

The predominant wind direction will be from the southwest and it will stay frost free and rather mild with temperature around 10 degrees.

Western and northwestern Scotland will get the worst part of this storm with gust up to more than 90mph.

Severe weather pre-warning:
-------------------------------
The weekend from Friday afternoon until Sunday will be very wet and windy.

Ex-hurricane Humberto will make his way across the Atlantic and turn into an extratropical cyclone.
This will become Amy, the first named storm of this season.
It will most likely become an intense and large storm, but the expact path will be unknown until Friday morning.

This uncertainty translates into enormous differences in wind speed, direction and rain predictions.
So please keep an eye on the forecasts later this week.

A wild start to the new year 2025

Another storm will cross Scotland today and tomorrow and from midnight onwards the wind will turn to northerly directions.

Tomorrow and Thursday will see gale force northerly winds coinciding with spring high tides that can lead to a storm surge in the Moray Firth.
This will most likely cause overtopping waves and potential flooding along the coastline
High tide tomorrow and Thursday will be around 1am and 1pm.

Please keep an eye on the SEPA flood warning and stay safe.

A stormy weekend ahead.

Today's wind is just a taster for what is likely to come on the weekend:

Very strong westerly winds and changing airmasses with rain and showers will persist until Monday.
On Saturday and Sunday we will see a 24h long spell of very stormy conditions with wind gusts between 60-75mph.

Due to the current tidal height and wind direction, I do not expect much overtopping in Portgordon, but the water will be very rough though.

Tie up everything outside and better hunker down this weekend and avoid unnecessary travel.

Keep an eye on the weather warnings to stay informed.

Storm Warning: Storm Ashley to arrive on Sunday

Please keep yourselves updated about the storm tomorrow that will bring high wind speeds from southerly directions.
Wind speed could reach up to 70mph in gusts, but as those wind will blow offshore, there is no threat of overtopping, though currently we have very high spring tides.

The peak of the storm will be in the night to Monday and after that the winds will slowly decrease, though it will stay rather windy for most of the ocoming week.

Please arrange you travel accordingy, make sure everything outside is properly tied down and prepare for potential power outages.

Stay safe!

Weather Pre-Warning (Rain) for Wednesday evening until Thursday evening (22-23/05/2024)

Please keep an eye on the weather forecast because there is a risk of very high rainfall from Wednesday evening until Thursday evening.
The rainfall could amount to more than 100mm within 24h which is the amount the usually falls within 2 months.
This rain will be accompanied by strong northerly winds up to 40mph an the temperature will be hardly reaching a maximum of 10°C.

Please adjust any travel plans accordingly as road conditions might be very diffcult.
Local flooding due to the high rainfall is also likely,

I will update this warning if the forecast models change.

Take care!
