Book if the day- This lovely City

An atmospheric and utterly compelling debut novel about a Jamaican immigrant living in postwar London, This Lovely City shows that new arrivals have always been the prime suspects ― but that even in the face of anger and fear, there is always hope.

London, 1950. With the war over and London still rebuilding, jazz musician Lawrie Matthews has answered England’s call for labour. Arriving from Jamaica aboard the Empire Windrush, he’s rented a tiny room in south London and fallen in love with the girl next door.

Book of day-
The Best of Me is a love story by the best-selling American author Nicholas Sparks. It was adapted into a feature film by the same name in 2014. The novel is about the conflict-ridden love story between Dawson Cole and Amanda Colliers, high school lovers who were separated by social circumstances. Twenty-five years later, they get together to honor the memory of Tuck Hostetler, a father-figure who was their silent supporter and well-wisher. Once the former lovers meet, the memories of their romance come to life, and they are forced to make difficult choices. The story weaves between the past and the present, invoking the power of true love to transcend time and death. The novel explores the themes of love, guilt, redemption and flawed human relationships

Book of the book- wishes under the willow tree by Phaedra Patrick

Wishes Under the Willow Tree tells the story of Benedict Stone, a forty-four year old jeweller whose life has lost its lustre. A boulder of a man, he’s jovial and laidback on the outside, but he feels anything but.

His tenth wedding anniversary to Estelle is on the horizon, but his marriage is breaking down.

In trying to have a child for many years, Benedict and Estelle have focused on nothing else. They’ve forgotten how to relate as a couple in their own right. When Estelle moves out of their home, after Benedict’s reluctance to accept their childless fate, he is devastated. Benedict vows to win Estelle back – but he doesn’t know how.

One rainy night, after a disappointment with Estelle, Benedict is alone in his house once more, when there’s a knock at the door. Thinking his wife has returned Benedict answers to find a young stranger on his doorstep. The girl announces that she is his sixteen-year-old niece, Gemma, and that she’s arrived from America to stay with him for the summer.

Book of the day- A mother's shame by Rosie Goodwin

One rainy, dismal day in 1857, Maria Mundy arrives at the local mental asylum, Hatter's Hall, not as an inmate but as a worker. Here, she is ordered to care for Isabelle Montgomery, the daughter of an influential land-owner. But Isabelle is not insane. She, like many other young women confined within the solitary walls, has been banished here by her family. Hatter's Hall also serves as a place to hide unmarried women in the family way from prying eyes.

As the women's lives become entwined, they realise the perils of their predicament and plan an escape that could cost their lives. For if they stay at Hatter's Hall, there's every chance they might never leave. There is one person who can help them escape, Isabelle's brother Joshua - who can barely keep his eyes off Maria.
