A Memorable Evening at the Mansion House Swansea

Last Wednesday, the Mansion House in Swansea provided the perfect setting for a very special evening, as I had the pleasure of co-hosting a reception with Mrs Justice Stacey, the Presiding Judge for Wales.

This was the first occasion that such an event has been held in West Glamorgan, bringing together senior members of the judiciary from across South Wales, together with civic dignitaries.

The evening provided a valuable opportunity to come together in a relaxed and informal setting, away from the usual formal engagements, allowing time for conversation, friendship and the sharing of experiences. It was wonderful to see so many people united by a shared commitment to public service and supporting the communities we serve.

A special thank you to Mrs Justice Stacey for her support and partnership in hosting the evening. It was a pleasure to work together, and I sincerely hope this will be the first of many such gatherings in West Glamorgan.

My sincere thanks also go to the Under Sheriff, Mr Robert Williams, for his excellent organisation, and to the Lord-Lieutenant of West Glamorgan, Louise Fleet, and the Lord Mayor of Swansea, Councillor Penny Matthews, for kindly arranging the use of the beautiful Mansion House, which provided the perfect setting for this memorable occasion.

It was a privilege to welcome colleagues from across South Wales and to celebrate the importance of collaboration, partnership and public service.

On Wednesday, it was a privilege to attend the swearing-in ceremony for 6 new Magistrates at Swansea Crown Court.

The ceremony, conducted by the Presiding Judge for Wales, Mrs Justice Stacey, marked an important milestone as the new Magistrates formally took their Judicial Oath and Oath of Allegiance, committing themselves to administer justice fairly, impartially and with integrity.

Magistrates play a vital role in our justice system. As volunteers drawn from all walks of life, they give their time and experience in service to their communities, making decisions that have a significant impact on the lives of others. Their commitment to upholding the rule of law deserves our respect and appreciation.

As High Sheriff of West Glamorgan, one of my principal responsibilities is to support the judiciary, and it was an honour to witness these new Magistrates begin their judicial service. I wish each of them every success as they undertake this important public duty in the service of justice and the people of our communities.

Today I had the pleasure of visiting the Probation Service in Swansea, which serves the communities of Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot.

I was warmly welcomed by Laura Dunn, Head of Probation Delivery Unit, and Joanne Stephens, Deputy Head, who provided an excellent presentation on the important role and responsibilities of the Probation Service. This included the different models of support they provide, their vital role in rehabilitation and reducing reoffending, and some of the challenges they face.

I was also given a guided tour of the offices and had the opportunity to meet staff from the various teams, gaining a greater understanding of the wide range of roles and responsibilities across the service.

A particular privilege was spending time with one of the people supported by the Probation Service and his probation practitioner, Kieran. The individual was keen to share his journey, the challenges he has faced and the positive steps he is taking to move forward with his life. It was clear that Kieran had developed a strong relationship built on trust, respect and encouragement, which was helping the individual work towards his goals.

I also met with a group of probation staff and found the discussion extremely valuable. Hearing first hand about the challenges they face, together with the actions and approaches they are taking to address them, provided a real insight into the dedication, professionalism and commitment required within the service. It was clear that staff are passionate about supporting individuals to make positive changes while helping to keep our communities safe.

The Probation Service plays a vital role within our criminal justice system. Much of its work takes place away from public attention, but its contribution to rehabilitation, reducing reoffending and supporting safer communities deserves recognition and thanks.

My sincere thanks to Laura, Joanne, Kieran and all the staff for their warm welcome and for sharing an insight into their important work.

Gower Riding Club – Celebrating 90 Years

Today it was a privilege to attend the Gower Riding Club’s 90th Anniversary celebrations on the beautiful Gower Peninsula.

Founded in 1936, the Club is the oldest civilian riding club in the United Kingdom, and today’s event was a fitting celebration of nine decades of dedication, friendship and equestrian excellence. It was a pleasure to join His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of West Glamorgan, Louise Fleet, and the Lord Mayor of Swansea, Councillor Penny Matthews, in marking this significant milestone.

The Gower Peninsula provided a truly spectacular setting for the celebrations. As Britain’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it reflects the Club’s deep respect for both the natural environment and the traditions of equestrian sport. The care shown by members in maintaining these wonderful surroundings is a testament not only to their commitment to the Club but also to preserving this special landscape for future generations.

As High Sheriff, one of my priorities is to celebrate volunteering, and Gower Riding Club is a wonderful example of what volunteers can achieve. For generations, members have devoted countless hours to maintaining the grounds, developing excellent facilities, organising competitions and creating opportunities for riders of all ages and abilities. Their dedication has enabled the Club to flourish for 90 years and ensures it continues to go from strength to strength.

It was also a real pleasure to catch up with former High Sheriff Sally Goldstone, who was actively involved with Gower Riding Club for many years. It was lovely to see her sharing in the celebrations and reflecting on the Club’s proud history and the many friendships it has fostered over the decades.

I was particularly pleased to learn more about the outstanding work of the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA). Hearing the many positive stories of how riding has helped build confidence, independence and self-esteem, while improving physical and emotional wellbeing, was both inspiring and uplifting. It was a powerful reminder of the life changing difference that horses, and the dedicated volunteers who support the RDA can make to so many people.

Congratulations to Chairman Martin Williams, the Committee, members, competitors and every volunteer, past and present on this outstanding achievement. Your commitment has created a club that is not only rich in history but continues to make a positive difference to the lives of so many people.

I wish Gower Riding Club every success as it embarks on its next 90 years. 🐴🎉

Tarian Fraud Protect Team – Protecting People Through Knowledge and Awareness

At last week’s South Wales Police Community Day at the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea, I had the pleasure of meeting Emma Banks and Tanya Bennett from the Tarian Fraud Protect Team.

Tarian is the Regional Organised Crime Unit covering South Wales, Gwent and Dyfed-Powys, and the Fraud Protect Team plays a vital role in helping to keep individuals, businesses and communities safer from the growing threat of fraud and cybercrime.

Through community engagement, awareness sessions and training, Emma and Tanya provide practical advice on recognising scams, understanding the tactics used by fraudsters, protecting personal information and knowing what steps to take if you become a victim.

Fraud is becoming increasingly sophisticated, and it can affect anyone. Some simple but important messages include:

• Avoid clicking on links in unexpected texts or emails from unknown or untrusted sources.
• Always ensure you are using genuine websites and applications.
• Be aware that fraudsters can spoof telephone numbers to appear genuine. If you need to contact your bank or mobile phone provider, use 159 where available to do so safely.

I was impressed by Emma and Tanya’s commitment to supporting communities and helping people build confidence in protecting themselves against fraud. Awareness and knowledge are among our strongest defences.

I would encourage community groups, charities, businesses and organisations across West Glamorgan to consider inviting the Tarian Fraud Protect Team to deliver one of their free awareness sessions.

Yesterday, it was a pleasure to attend the Swansea Police Fun Day at the National Waterfront Museum.

The event provided a wonderful opportunity for children and their families to meet local police officers and learn more about the wide range of work they do to keep our communities safe. Young visitors thoroughly enjoyed trying on police uniforms and helmets, exploring police vehicles and equipment, and meeting the ever-popular Billy Blue.

There were also numerous information and community stalls offering crime prevention advice, safeguarding information and practical support, highlighting the importance of partnership working between South Wales Police and local organisations.

It was fantastic to see so many families enjoying the day, engaging with officers in such a positive and relaxed environment. Events like these help build trust, strengthen relationships with the community and inspire confidence in the vital work carried out by our police service every day.

My sincere thanks to everyone from South Wales Police, the National Waterfront Museum and all the partner organisations who helped make the day such a success.

A special thank you to PC Paul Smith for the kind invitation and for looking after me throughout the day. I would also like to thank his colleagues, who were equally welcoming, helpful and generous with their time, making everyone feel at ease and ensuring the event was such an enjoyable experience. Your dedication to engaging with the community is greatly appreciated.

Graduation Ceremonies

Over the past two weeks, I have had the pleasure of attending graduation ceremonies for both the University of Wales Trinity Saint David at the Brangwyn Hall and Swansea University at the Swansea Arena.

These were truly special occasions, bringing together graduates, their families, friends and lecturers to celebrate years of hard work, commitment and achievement. There was a wonderful sense of pride and excitement as each graduate crossed the stage to receive their award, marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.

Graduation is about much more than academic success. It is a celebration of determination, resilience and perseverance, while also recognising the invaluable encouragement and support of families, friends and university staff who have helped make these achievements possible.

As High Sheriff of West Glamorgan, it was a privilege to share in these celebrations and witness the remarkable talent, ambition and potential of so many graduates. Our universities play a vital role in shaping the future of our communities, our nation and beyond, and it is inspiring to see so many talented individuals ready to make their mark on the world.

My warmest congratulations to every graduate. Whatever path you choose next, I wish you every success, fulfilment and happiness. May you continue to learn, inspire others and make a positive difference wherever your journey takes you.

Last Saturday evening, Jayne and I had the pleasure of attending the Swansea Bay Ladies Choir Summer Concert at St James’ Church, Swansea.

The choir treated the audience to a wonderful programme of music spanning a variety of eras and styles, showcasing both their versatility and the enjoyment they clearly take in performing together. Their enthusiasm and harmonious singing created a thoroughly enjoyable evening for everyone present.

My congratulations to the choir, under the musical direction of Helen John, whose leadership was evident throughout the performance. Thanks also to accompanist and compère Jonathan Lycett, who guided the evening with warmth and humour.

The concert was further enhanced by two excellent guest performers: baritone Lewis Smith, whose performance was superb, and local poet David Hughes, whose readings added a thoughtful and distinctive dimension to the evening.

Thank you to everyone involved for such an entertaining summer concert. Community choirs play an important role in bringing people together through music, friendship and shared experiences, and this was a wonderful example of that.

This morning, it was a privilege to attend the Sunday service at Swansea Minster with my wife, Jayne.

During the service, I was delighted to witness the installation of Diana Stroia, the immediate Past High Sheriff of West Glamorgan, as the first lay member of the College of Chaplains at Swansea Minster.

The College of Chaplains brings together those serving across Swansea’s hospitals, universities, prisons and wider civic life, offering pastoral care and support to people in the places where they live, work and face life’s challenges. Diana’s appointment as its first lay member is a significant and fitting recognition of the valuable contribution that those beyond ordained ministry can make to this important work.

It was a thoughtful and uplifting service, with prayers asking for a listening heart, a gentle spirit, a courageous voice and an open door, qualities that resonate far beyond the Church and serve as an inspiration to us all in our communities and public service.

My warmest congratulations to Diana on her installation. I wish her every success in this new ministry and thank the Rev’d Canon Justin Davies, Rector of Swansea Minster, the Venerable Jonathon Davies, Archdeacon of Gower, Mr Paul Murray, and everyone at Swansea Minster for their warm welcome and for making it such a memorable morning.

It was a pleasure to be there to support Diana as she begins this important new chapter of service to the people of Swansea and beyond.
