📰 Tasked for the 100th time this year!

It’s proving to be yet another busy year for Port Talbot Coastguard

📍 Grand Pavilion - Porthcawl.

We were tasked alongside Porthcawl Coastguard to assist South Wales Police following reports of a person in the water opposite the Grand Pavilion.

As we departed the station, we received news that the casualty was safe and with Police.

We were therefore stood down and returned home

💪🏻 TRAINING NIGHT 💪🏻

Last night, our team were put through their paces during an in-depth water rescue training session at Aberafan Beach, led by Senior Coastal Operations Officers.

The session covered a range of dry and wet rescue techniques, including bankside safety systems, lanyarding, tethered rescues and more. Following the training, the team successfully passed their assessments. 💪🏻

A huge well done to everyone involved. Our team entered the sea on three occasions last year, helping to save nine lives. This is why we continue to train and develop our skills—to ensure we are ready to respond when we are needed most.

3 September is Merchant Navy Day – a day to remember and honour those who lost their lives in the pursuit of their work at sea and those who continue to keep essential supply lines in operation.

During two world wars, the bravery of Merchant Navy seafarers kept supply lines open, and now, in 2026, they continue to act as key workers, bringing essential food, medicines, and other goods to the UK.

Our day-to-day lives would not be the same without the work of Merchant Navy seafarers.

At the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, we highly value our seafarers’ service. Their well-being and safety are our top priorities, and we are committed to ensuring seafarers have access to training, development opportunities, and support throughout their career.

We use Merchant Navy Day to raise the Red Ensign in support of an industry that is often forgotten miles out at sea.

📰 August Update

In the month of August the team responded to 1️⃣5️⃣ emergency call-outs involving:

🔵 Casualty care.
🔵 Despondents.
🔵 Missing Persons.
🔵 Persons in the water.
🔵 Paddleboarders in difficulty.
🔵 Deceased Porpoise.

We operated closely alongside our valued partner agencies:
📟 Porthcawl Coastguard.
📟 Mumbles Coastguard.
📟 National Coastwatch Institution Porthcawl...and other valued emergency services

We have also attended wonderful PR events such as Meet the Coastguard's at Margam Country Park with National Coastwatch Institution - Porthcawl and Gower Seal Group aswell as Festival of the Sea on Aberafan Beach.

Beyond incidents our team continued regular training exercises and coastal patrols to ensure operational readiness and maintain a visible presence along our coastline.

📰 Busy Bank Holiday for Port Talbot Coastguard.

📟 Attendance Request - 9️⃣8️⃣.
📆 31/08/26.
🕑 15:58.
📍 Civic - Swansea.

Our team was tasked to assist Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust with a medical incident on the beach near Civic Swansea.

On arrival, the casualty had been stabilised by ambulance crews and was receiving the appropriate care. We would like to wish him a full and speedy recovery.

📍 Aberafan Beach Slipway.

Oue 2nd tasking of the day was to assist South Wales Police following reports of a person in the water.

As our team prepared to conduct a search of the beach, with RNLI Port Talbot preparing to launch, we received confirmation that the individual had been located safely inland.

All responding resources were subsequently stood down.

💪🏻 Inter-Agency Bonding

Yesterday the team ventured across the road for a fantastic and important inter-agency working session with our colleagues at RNLI Port Talbot.

Yes, we had a BBQ 🌭🔥 But more importantly, the afternoon provided a valuable opportunity for both crews to spend time together, build relationships, and get to know one another outside of operational incidents.

Team-building sessions like these are invaluable. Developing strong working relationships and understanding how each crew operates helps ensure that, when we are tasked together, incidents can run as smoothly, efficiently, and safely as possible.

A huge thank you to our DSO and Lifeboat Operations Manager for organising the event, and to the Port Talbot Lifeboat crew for hosting.

We’re already looking forward to the next one!

📰 Double Deployment with our Colleagues at Porthcawl Coastguard.

📟 Attendance Request - 9️⃣6️⃣.

📍 Rest Bay - Porthcawl.

Our team was tasked alongside Porthcawl Coastguard to assist RNLI Lifeguards South East Wales with a medical incident at Rest Bay.

Upon our arrival on scene, the incident was quickly resolved. Shortly afterwards, a second tasking was received involving a vessel in distress in the vicinity of Margam Sands.

📟 Attendance Request - 9️⃣7️⃣.

As we were already on scene, we assisted Porthcawl Coastguard in locating the vessel and maintaining situational awareness while the appropriate response assets were mobilised.

Once the relevant lifeboats were launched and the situation was being managed, we were stood down and returned to station.

⚡ THUNDER

No, it’s not AC/DC… it’s HM Coastguard! 😎

Here are some safety tips for staying safe along the coast during upcoming thunderstorms 👇🏻

🌩️ Avoid piers, promenades and exposed coastal areas during thunderstorms.

🌊 Keep away from the water, including beaches, rocks and harbours.

⚡️ If you hear thunder, seek shelter in a substantial building or enclosed vehicle.

🚤 If you’re on or near the water, return to shore safely as soon as possible.

📱 Keep an eye on weather forecasts and official warnings before heading out.

🚨 If you see someone in difficulty at sea or around the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Please don’t take risks — thunderstorms can be dangerous, particularly around open water and exposed coastal locations.

📰 Swift Joint Response Reunites Children with Parents on Aberafan Beach.

📍 Aberafan Beach.

Our team was tasked alongside RNLI Lifeguards Swansea to assist with two children who had become separated from their parents on Aberafan Beach.

Coastguard Rescue Officers and Lifeguards conducted a thorough search of various areas of the beach.

The Lifeguards soon located the children’s parents, allowing the children to be safely reunited with their family.
