Had a great day today at the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Inverbroom estate, providing a tiny bit of help with footpath maintenance. At over 18,000 acres the site is more than 200 times the size of Bac Dubh so it’s a huge and ambitious project. Fantastic to see nature restoration on this scale happening in Wester Ross!

What a great idea! It’s well known that being outdoors in nature has huge health benefits - every hospital should have one!

The outdoor ward, at King's College Hospital in London, will monitor how much it boosts the recovery of seriously ill patients.

We're looking for a couple of strong and fit people local to Poolewe who would like a few hours of paid work sometime in the first couple of weeks of July (dates and times flexible).

We are starting our first piece of major nature restoration work at Bac Dubh, which is putting leaky dams on the small burn that runs across the land. To build these we need tree trunks - and we don't have any available at Bac Dubh so we are kindly being supplied with about 20 trees from Laide Wood (photo is of the trees still standing but they will be cut down shortly).

We need to transport these to Bac Dubh on a trailer (the easy part) and then get them 500m into the land. This is the hard part because we can't get a vehicle in, so they will have to be roped up and dragged in manually. The trees and brash will be cut into 2-3 metre lengths so we won't be dragging a whole tree!

If you are interested in a bit of outdoor conservation work (or training for a strongman competition) please get in touch - message on Facebook, email [email protected] or phone 07592 614403 for more details.

Thank you!

There are way too many deer in Scotland. Red and roe deer are native species but because we have killed all their predators like lynx and wolves, deer numbers have rocketed to ten times the number that the land can sustain. It's not good for deer, and it's not good for our natural environment, with overgrazing by deer meaning our native plants are unable to regenerate.

But there is an answer - and it also neatly solves another problem, that of being able to feed the population on healthy, sustainable meat. This new 5 minute film explains it.

Wild Scottish venison is healthy, sustainable and locally abundant. Greater demand for it could help support the deer management needed to restore resilient ...

Happy Birthday Sir David Attenborough. You’re an inspiration!

Today, Sir David Attenborough turns 100.

For generations, he's helped us fall in love with the natural world – and shown us what we stand to lose if we fail to protect it.

He once said:

“𝘛𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘵, 𝘸𝘦 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘣𝘪𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥. 𝘐𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥. 𝙒𝙚 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙧𝙚𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙.”

Rewilding the world won't happen all at once. It will happen because people, communities and countries choose to lead – restoring nature one place at a time.

Scotland could be at the forefront of that movement. By reconnecting habitats, reviving natural processes and bringing back missing species, we can help shape a future that's richer in wildlife, more resilient to climate change and better for people too.

That’s why we’re committed to – and why we believe Scotland can become the world's first .

Wishing Sir David the happiest of birthdays – and thanking him for a lifetime spent inspiring wonder, hope and action for the natural world.

We’ve been away for a couple of weeks and Spring has arrived at Bac Dubh in our absence! On a walk there today we spotted green hairstreak butterflies and small heath moths, as well as hares-tail cotton grass and lots of other Spring flowers. And looks like a badger paid a visit from the lovely tracks left in the mud!

An interesting article. We were both working for the UK Atomic Energy Authority at the time of Chernobyl, researching steam explosions in nuclear reactors. A different life, and we’ve ended up in rewilding too!
