🌍 10th October is World Mental Health Day and let’s remind ourselves today what a fantastic community of supportive, caring students and staff we have here at Poole Grammar School.

🥰 Always be on the lookout for people who might be struggling or just don’t seem themselves, and tell them you’re there for them, even if they don’t want to talk.

🗣️ If you are finding things tough, please speak to someone as soon as possible, whether that’s a sibling or parent, a friend or tutor, a teacher or prefect. You can also report problems anonymously via our Whisper system. Sharing a problem might seem really tough, but as soon as you’ve voiced it, the weight on your shoulders really will be lightened and you’ll start to feel better.

Meanwhile, here’s Mr Way’s suggested playlist to help us all smile a bit more this weekend!
🎵 Imagine Dragons: On Top of the World
🎶 Macklemore: Glorious
🎵 Raye: Joy
🎶 Pharrell Williams: Happy
🎵 Katy Perry: Roar
🎶 Smash Mouth: All Star

❤️‍🩹 Don’t struggle on your own. We’re here for you.

📸 EUROPE THROUGH YOUR LENS WINNER! 🇪🇺 Huge congratulations to Phoenebe, who was announced as winner of our photography competition in assembly today. 🏆 His stunning shot perfectly captured a cool, crisp autumn morning in the Bavarian mountains and the judges all chose it as their Number 1. We love it! 🏔️🍂

A massive well done to everyone else who entered too. 👏 Madame Mason was overwhelmed by all the incredible submissions, from beach sunsets, cityscapes and hillside views to farm animals and delicious food. 🏖️ 🐄🥐 Thank you for sharing your Europe with us!

👏 Well done to Miles and Navindu and the rest of our EDI (Equality Diversity Inclusion) ambassadors for putting together this fantastic Black History Month display in our main reception.

The board as well as other posters around school highlight just a few of the important figures who’ve had a lasting impact on the black community and the wider world over the past two centuries. From authors and activists to musicians and sportspeople, they’ve raised awareness, brought about positive change and encouraged debate, which is what BHM is all about.

Thank you to our EDIs for helping highlight the cause!

Did you know that this week is the UK’s first ever National Cadets Week? Launched by 👑 HM the King himself, it celebrates the tens of thousands of young people involved in the cadet forces (including many PGS students) and the impact they and their adult trainers have on our communities and our country as a whole. 👮🏼‍♂️👨🏼‍🚒👩🏾‍⚕️👨🏽‍🔧👨🏻‍🏭

There are plenty of cadet options in our local area, including several Army Cadet centres, the Poole Sea Cadets, the Dorset & Wiltshire Wing Air Training Corps, Dorset Police Cadets, Dorset Fire Cadets and the St John Ambulance Cadets. A lot of the crews have open days this coming weekend and are welcoming new members as well as adult volunteers, so do look online for more information.

Being a cadet doesn’t have to result in a career in the forces, but can give you vital skills, knowledge and training that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

✨ Congratulations to our amazing bunch of new ABAs (Anti-Bullying Ambassadors) who have just begun their training under the watchful eye of some of last year’s group and Prefects. They’ve got stuck into all kinds of learning and team-building activities, and are already planning a raft of events to raise funds and awareness. Watch this space for a cake sale, odd sock day and some special lunches in the canteen! 🍛

Mrs Gibbs and Mrs Couch were inundated with applications, and, like all of us, are thrilled that so many boys want to get involved and make a difference. Well done to you all! ✨

🍂 Colours of Autumn! After this morning’s misty start, we managed to capture some beautiful autumnal colour all around the school grounds. We wonder if you know where some (or all!) of these might be found!? Let us know!

🌈 We’ve got a whole host of colours aside from your usual reds and browns, from the russets of the maple leaves, rich scarlets of the hawthorn haws and Malus fruit, bright red of the Japanese barberry and rowan berries and the sunshine yellow of our sunflower and oxtongue (complete with visiting bee-mimic hoverfly) to the subtle mauve of rosemary flowers and Japanese anemones, rusty pink of the fading hydrangea, shocking orange of the Californian poppies and pyracanthus berries, warm purples of the viper’s bugloss, hollyhock and geranium Rozanne, delicate pinks of the cyclamen, cool peach of the English cabbage roses and the burgundy of the Virginia creeper. 🌈 What an absolute treat!

When Languages Week 🇪🇺 meets Bake-Off 🧁 this is the impressive result. We had some fantastic entries for our baking competition, with each contestant creating something inspired by languages they speak or countries they’ve visited.

Our teachers had a a tough job tasting and rating the entries, but eventually came up with a Top Three (separated, by the way, by just 0.01 points)…

🥇 1st PLACE: Rowan’s European croissants
The croissants were home-made and filled with creams inspired by the flavours of countries such as Black Forest gateau for Germany, Sachertorte for Austria and Bakewell Tart for Britain. Judges’ comments included “Amazing variety” and “Such incredible skills and such a lot of work” and “Wow!”

🥈 2nd PLACE: Basque ‘burnt’ cheesecake by Lewis
It may look humble but it tasted Oh So GOOD! Judges’ comments included: “Restaurant standard” and “Jaw-droppingly melt in the mouth”.

🥉 3rd PLACE: Finn’s French cupcakes and Eiffel Tower fudge
This plate included cupcakes topped with creamy icing and cute motifs such as a baguette, fleur de Lys and poodle, as well as Eiffel Tower-shaped chocolate delices! Judges’ comments included: “Sweet representations of a boulangerie” and “Such airy sponge and tasty icing” and “Gorgeous Hershey-esque chocolate”.

It was tough to place the other entries, so here are just some of our judges’ comments:

Rory’s flag cookies: “Yummy and soft… Lovely texture…. So impressed that he speaks all these languages!”

Reuben’s Irish Victoria sponge: “Incredibly proudly themed cake… Took me straight back to being in an Irish tearoom… Delightfully soft sponge and clean-cut decoration.”

Jan’s flag cupcakes: “An impressive range of languages that he speaks… Chocolate chips in the sponge were a nice surprise!”

Luke’s EU blue bread: “An amazing idea and such rich colour… Very positive European message… Hats off for originality!”

Thanks to all the students who entered and thank you also to the teachers who tasted, enjoyed, rated and judged. An extra ‘gracias’ to Sr Hernandez for counting up all the marks and summarising the comments. Now, when can we do this again!!
