A old Nursery Rhyme about the The Nicholls Stone, sent in by a local historian

Ring a ring of Nicholls,
A stone from lands afar,
The only red stone brought back,
From battles fierce and spar.

Blood upon its surface,
A chief in valor fell,
In mourning for their leader,
They carried home his knell.

'Round the castle’s stronghold,
The clan hath made their stay,
Touch the only red stone,
Feel the past this day.

A pilgrimage of honor,
With hands upon the stone,
Magic in our history,
Together, ne’er alone.

Said to be chanted in rings dancing around the castle greens

Healing Powers of The Nicholls Stone
Many people over the years said to touch the stone was like a healing process.
The Stone does have interesting characteristics and a interesting history.
The Nicholls Clan ( local) replied to the call for the war in the east ( crusades) after a mighty battle The Nicholls Clan leader died in brutal combat and died from his wounds.
The Clan leader was buried near the battle field but the Clan in morning took back to Plympton the red stone which was soaked in the Clans leaders blood as a act of remembrance.
On the return to Plympton and many heated debates it was decided to add it to the castle being built(The Plympton Castle) a local religious man said it should face east to were the Clan leader was laid to rest.
This gave the stone a extra connection to its legacy.
The healing myth about The Nicholls Stone might be hocus-pocus but many have claimed they have been healed or felt a divine experience from a pilgrimage to the stone .

There are now many different Nicholls family crests due to the off shoots of the family over the years but the original crest that founded the name from the Nicholls clan used a blue shield with a yellow band, later 3 lions were added .

A explanation of The Nicholls Stone laid on the construction of the castle by the local nicholls family.
The stone was brought back from the east ( crusades probably)
In those days The Nicholls family was like a Clan and the head was killed in battle and his blood washed the stone red, in a state or mourning the clan brought the stone back to their mother land.
The nicholls family settled in the houses surrounding the castle and are still living there to this day.
And yes I am a descendent of the original clan who laid the stone

A nice pilgrimage for any Nicholls ( Surname ) is to locate the stone and put your hand on the stone, a myth of magical powers or just a nice piece of history to ground you and your family to the local area.
My son in the picture, has visited it every year so far
