"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the truly remarkable Captain Sir Tom Moore. He captured the heart of the nation at a dark time in our recent history, inspiring others by his selfless attitude and humble manner. His legacy and determination will be remembered by a generation."
- Sir Andrew Gregory, CEO, SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity

Known affectionately as 'Captain Tom', Tom Moore was born in Keighley, West Yorkshire in 1920, and served in the British Army in India and the Burma campaign during the Second World War. He later became an instructor in armoured warfare.

Captain Tom became widely known and celebrated for his achievements in raising more than ยฃ30 million for NHS charities during the Covid-19 pandemic, in the run-up to his 100th birthday last year. On 17 July 2020, he was invested as a Knight Bachelor at Windsor Castle.

A true and enduring hero across two centuries. We thank you for your service to our nation, Tom.
