Government pauses Devon council reorganisation

The Government has today announced that its plans for local government reorganisation in Plymouth, Devon and Torbay will be paused and reviewed.

The Prime Minister agreed to look again at the Devon decision in response to my question last week. I am delighted that he has done just that. There is now an opportunity to properly reconsider what has been proposed, listen to the communities affected properly and make sure that whatever comes next is right for Devon. It was clear from the petition I tabled last week how strong the local feeling against the plan was and I’m grateful to all those who have spoken to me about it.

The wider review follows updated legal advice to the government. Devon is among a further 14 areas where plans will be paused and looked at again.

Importantly, the Government has also confirmed that local elections in May 2027 will go ahead on existing council boundaries whilst the review takes place. This means elections in Plymouth, the South Hams and West Devon.

I appreciate a huge amount of work had been done to start work on reorganisation plans but, it needs to be done correctly and I welcome the government’s decision today.

🎖️ Keeping our promise to veterans

South West Devon has a proud Armed Forces community, so it was really good to join Help For Heroes in Parliament recently and hear directly from veterans about some of the difficulties they can face after leaving service.

The Armed Forces Covenant promises that nobody should be disadvantaged because of their service, but for those living with an injury or illness, getting the right healthcare and financial support can still be difficult.

I’ve added my support to the People’s Promise to Veterans, which calls for fairer and more consistent support, no matter who you are or where you live.

A huge thank you to Help for Heroes and its ambassadors for sharing their experiences and for everything they do to support veterans and their families.

Plymouth Conservatives attack devolution consultation

Plymouth Conservative leader Councillor Chris Wood has described the proposed consultation on whether Plymouth should join the Devon and Torbay Combined County Authority as a “farce”.

Councillor Wood says the process fails to give Plymouth residents a basic choice over whether they want the city to become part of the authority.

The consultation is due to be considered by Plymouth City Council’s Full Council on Monday.

Councillor Wood said residents deserve a clear and straightforward say on what he describes as a major decision for the future of Plymouth.

He also questioned whether the public is being given a genuine say, pointing out that the council has previously ignored residents’ views on changing the election cycle. He said the current consultation does not even ask people whether they want Plymouth to join a new devolved authority, raising questions over how meaningful the public’s involvement really is.

A key concern raised is that the consultation does not directly ask residents whether they actually want Plymouth to join a new devolved authority. Instead, the focus is on how any proposed changes could be delivered, rather than giving the public a straightforward choice on whether they support the principle of joining in the first place.
