From National Service to national glory. 🏆⚽

Sir Bobby Charlton’s story is one of discipline, resilience and world-class achievement.

Before becoming one of England’s greatest ever footballers, he completed his National Service with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps in Shrewsbury — serving in the Army during the same period he was beginning his legendary career with Manchester United.

He would go on to become a Manchester United icon, an England great, and a key member of the squad that lifted the 1966 FIFA World Cup.

His journey is a reminder that service, sport and personal development can go hand in hand. The values built through military life — teamwork, confidence, discipline, resilience and leadership — are the same values that help people succeed on the pitch, in the workplace and in life.

Today, the Army Reserve offers those same opportunities: the chance to challenge yourself, gain new skills, stay active, play sport, meet new people, travel, and be part of something bigger — all alongside your civilian career.

At 165 Port and Maritime Regiment RLC, you can build confidence, develop yourself, and discover opportunities you may never have considered.

Your next chapter could start with the Army Reserve.

🏆⚽ DREAMING OF REPRESENTING YOUR COUNTRY?

With the FIFA World Cup capturing the imagination of football fans around the world, it's worth remembering that there are many paths to achieving something extraordinary.

Former England international Alex Cottier proved that military service and elite sport can go hand in hand. Serving in the British Army, she developed the teamwork, resilience and determination that helped her progress to represent England on the international stage.

Today, the Army Reserve continues to offer incredible sporting opportunities. Whether you're passionate about football, rugby, athletics, cycling, boxing or a wide range of other sports, you can compete, develop your skills and represent your unit, Corps and even the Army.

The Army Reserve isn't just about military training – it's about challenging yourself, building confidence, gaining qualifications, making lifelong friendships and pursuing opportunities you may never have thought possible.

You might not end up playing in a World Cup Final, but the Army Reserve can help you achieve goals, develop talents and create experiences that last a lifetime.

Could your next challenge start here?

From the battlefield to footballing history. 🏆⚽

Sir Alf Ramsey served in the British Army during the Second World War before going on to become a professional footballer — and later the manager who led England to World Cup glory in 1966.

Reflecting on his time in uniform, Sir Alf once described joining the Army as “one of the greatest things which ever happened to me.”

His story is a powerful reminder that military service can shape character, build confidence, develop leadership, and open doors you may never have expected.

Today, the Army Reserve continues to offer people the chance to grow, challenge themselves, learn new skills, travel, play sport, and be part of something bigger — all while maintaining a civilian career.

At 165 Port and Maritime Regiment RLC, you can gain unique military experience, build lifelong friendships, and develop skills that benefit you both in and out of uniform.
