🔬 MBA researchers are part of the international 100 Diatom Genomes Project, helping to unlock the genetic secrets of diatoms, microscopic algae that contribute around 20% of global carbon fixation and play a vital role in regulating Earth's climate. 🌍

The project will provide new insights into diatom diversity, evolution and their ability to adapt to changing environments.

🦠 What can an ancient aquatic fungus tell us about the evolution of life?

MBA researchers have revealed how an ancient group of aquatic fungi builds its cell walls, providing new insights into fungal evolution and establishing a little-studied species as an important model for future bioscience research.

🔬 Using fluorescent markers, the team was able to observe where key cell-wall proteins are active within the organism.

💬 "One of the most exciting parts of this work was seeing fluorescent signals under the microscope for the first time. It meant we could watch where important cell-wall proteins were active inside this tiny organism," said Lead Author Dr Trupti Gaikwad.

Marine Biology Masters graduate Daniel Hampton travelled to a shark conference in Sri Lanka thanks to the MBA Student Travel Bursaries programme.

“I am extremely grateful to the MBA for supporting my attendance through a student travel bursary and helping me access new skills, knowledge and networks as an aspiring shark ecologist. One of the benefits of attending the conference also gave me the connections/skills for my current role!”
