Volunteers week - Ann is another of our wonderful volunteers. She will be a familiar face to many, working at the library desk, which she has done since the end of covid. Ann also many other volunteering roles, she organises the used stamps which we collect for charity; our supply of NHS hearing aid batteries and helps provide tea and biscuits at the Pittenweem Talks. Ann loves volunteering, she finds the conversations with locals and visitors a high point of her library shifts. She finds the library is very useful for visitors looking for local information and it plays an important part in promoting the friendliness and welcoming nature of the East Neuk.
However Ann is most well known for setting up and running the unique Reminiscence Café. This is open to all older members of the community. The meetings, usually with a topic such as School Days or Summer Holidays spark memories of past events. Ann says they then often drift off the topic into other thoughts and share so many mutual reminiscences and current ideas. The café has a lovely loyal group of attendees and anyone is welcome to join.
Ann is an example of what makes our library such a special part of the community, our volunteers!

Volunteer week - Melissa has been a volunteer with the library since 2022. You may find her behind the desk in the library when you visit or see her helping out with the school children when they come in from Pittenweem Primary for stories and crafts. She says she enjoys her work with the library and found it a great way to meet people when she first moved into the area.
Melissa loves the idea of children being able to come into the library and choose a book by themselves, she feels this can be like a mini treasure find. Whether graphic novels or traditional print books, it gives a child the ability to make decisions and explore a world of stories and information all by themselves. This is such a good way of helping children develop.
One of her favourite library activities happens in the summer when we run a book hunt. Books are hidden by Melissa in plastic folders around Pittenweem. Children can search, read the books, and get involved in the fun of putting them back where they found them for others to find and enjoy.
She often wonders how often the books are found and re hidden. If you or your child has found one of our books in the book hunt, do let us know, we would love to hear.
