This remarkable statue took 12 years to complete. Pastoral Apollo was commissioned by the 3rd Earl of Egremont from renowned sculptor John Flaxman. Although the sculpture is signed and dated 1825, the first payment was made as early as 1813.

In Greek mythology, Apollo was one of the Twelve Olympian gods, celebrated as a symbol of light, youthful beauty, and reason. He was also closely connected with the care of flocks and herds.

Here, Flaxman portrays Apollo as the protector of shepherds, capturing both the god’s strength and his pastoral role in a marble masterpiece. He stands prominently in the North Gallery at Petworth.

Happy birthday to Col. George Wyndham, 1st Baron Leconfield 🎂

Born on this day in 1787, George Wyndham was the eldest son of the 3rd Earl of Egremont and Elizabeth Iliffe. As he was born before his parents married, he did not inherit his father's titles, but he did succeed to the family estates, including Petworth.

In 1815, he married F***y Blunt, and together they had eight children. A distinguished military officer, Wyndham served with the 20th Light Dragoons during the Peninsular War in 1812.

This striking portrait of Wyndham as a young man, painted by Thomas Phillips, can be seen today in the North Gallery at Petworth.

This ethereal portrait of Lady Elizabeth Wyndham (1752–1826) by Thomas Phillips may be one of the smaller paintings in the Carved Room, but it’s every bit as captivating as the grander works surrounding it.

It's actually a copy of an original by Sir Joshua Reynolds, replicating his soft brushstrokes and luminous tones to capture the graceful elegance associated with 18th-century British portraiture.

Lady Elizabeth — sister of the 3rd Earl of Egremont — served as Lady of the Bedchamber to Caroline of Brunswick (then the Princess of Wales).
