𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐋𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐮𝐬 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐦 𝐉𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐕𝐂

This evening, the Town Mayor, Cllr. Jamie Matthews, attended a short service to commemorate 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐋𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐮𝐬 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐦 𝐉𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐕𝐂 who was killed in action 110 years ago today, 31st May 1916.

Commander Jones was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross "𝒊𝒏 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒈𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒎𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒄𝒖𝒐𝒖𝒔 𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒅𝒆𝒗𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒖𝒕𝒚 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑱𝒖𝒕𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅."

🌳 Volunteers Needed – Tree Maintenance Sessions 🌳

Come along and help care for our newly planted trees and hedgerows! We’re holding two volunteer drop-in sessions on Wednesday 3rd June, and everyone is welcome.
📍 Avenue Pavilion
🕙 10:00am – 12:30pm
📍 Love Lane Football Ground
🕜 1:30pm – 4:00pm

We’ll be:
🌱 Weeding around young trees and hedgerows
🌿 Topping up mulch
💧 Watering

These are relaxed drop-in sessions, so you can pop by anytime and stay for as long as you like.

Tools, gloves, and biscuits will all be provided 🍪

When you're feeding the ducks, it’s not just the ducks you’re feeding.

Leaving large quantities of food such as bread and biscuits littering the Heath doesn’t just feed ducks — it also attracts rats and other vermin. Any leftovers that end up in the pond add extra nutrients to the water. That can encourage blue-green algae blooms which are harmful to aquatic life.

Ducks and other wildfowl are well adapted to find natural food, but if you’d still like to feed them, please do so responsibly and only offer small amounts of suitable bird food.
