Protecting the River Tay catchment through fisheries management, conservation, research and enforcement across over 5,000 miles of rivers, burns and lochs. Its huge catchment covers 10% of the country, straddling its centre from coast to coast. Its fame as a salmon river is legendary too. It is here that the British record rod caught salmon, a 64 pounder, was landed by Miss Georgina Ballantine in

1922. But the River Tay needs help. The Tay Rivers Trust and the Tay District Salmon Fisheries Board are two organisations with the common purpose of caring for its fish populations and their environment. The Board is a statutory organisation which has been protecting and improving salmon fisheries since 1863. The Trust, with a mission to conserve all fish species and their habitats, is responsible for research, education and public engagement.

A busy week for the team, including our intern, with plenty of important work being undertaken!

This week, we were asked to assist a gas provider with a fish rescue on the River Eden, allowing essential work to be carried out to protect a gas main.

A range of species, including trout, salmon, eels and lamprey, were safely rescued with great care by the team before the work took place.

A great team effort all round and a valuable opportunity for our intern to gain hands-on experience!

A big thank you to Forth District Salmon Fishery Board for welcoming our Catchment Manager and Office Manager to their Public Meeting in Dunblane yesterday.

It was a valuable opportunity to hear about the challenges facing another District Salmon Fishery Board, share experiences and concerns, and discuss the common issues affecting our rivers and fisheries.

Thank you for the warm welcome and for the interesting and constructive discussions. Working together, sharing knowledge and learning from one another is so important as we all strive towards a shared goal — improving our rivers for salmon, communities and the future.
