💜 This week is Volunteers' Week and we want to recognise the thousands of people who give up their time to make Wychavon a better place to live.

According to our residents' survey, 37% of adults in Wychavon volunteer in their local area – that's estimated to be almost 40,000 of you making a difference in your communities and that's before we count the efforts of our young people too!

Over the last year we've been celebrating some of these amazing people through our Community Stars awards scheme, including:

⭐ Karen and Steve Bearcroft, who dedicate their spare time to looking after the welfare of the swans along the River Avon in Evesham and clearing away hazards like discarded fishing line and dumped rubbish.

⭐ Margaret Ballard, who has run a ladies' choir in Inkberrow for more than 50 years, creating a place of friendship, support and encouragement.

⭐ Katie Thorley, who gives up countless hours supporting Wychbold and Droitwich Baby Bank. Her passion for supporting families through the cost-of-living crisis has inspired others, including members of her own family, to volunteer.

⭐ Cheryl Peters, whose service to the community in Norton includes being a Public Rights of Way Warden, a member of the Worcestershire Regiment Group and Norton Royal British Legion, volunteering in the coffee shop and bar at both the Parish Hall and Sergeants' Mess, and Chair of the Community Apiary Group.

Whether you're helping at your local food bank, providing advice to those in need, caring for our natural environment, running a sports club, helping people get around or supporting the next generation, there's just one thing we want to say...

🙏 THANK YOU! Your efforts do not go unnoticed.

🚨 Two convenience stores in Evesham have been handed three-month closure orders following a joint investigation into the sale of illegal ci******es, to***co and vapes.

The action was brought by Wychavon through Worcestershire Regulatory Services. It followed an extensive investigation by officers from Worcestershire County Council Trading Standards, supported by the Evesham Safer Neighbourhood policing team.

🏗️ The planning application to demolish the Riverside Shopping Centre is now live.

The application marks the first phase of regenerating the site and, if approved, will see the shopping centre and multi-storey car park cleared ready for redevelopment into a mixed residential, retail and leisure scheme.

💬 Read and comment on the application by following the links here: www.wychavon.gov.uk/riverside

Cllr Emma Kearsey, Executive Board Member for Planning, Infrastructure and Urban Design, said: “Submitting this application shows we are moving at pace and delivering on our promise to the people of Evesham. While demolition is never the most exciting part of regeneration, it paves the way for the transformational opportunity ahead that will breathe new life into our town centre.”

Cllr Richard Morris, Leader of Wychavon, added: “We are already attracting strong interest in the regeneration of the Riverside site, which is a sign of confidence in the town and the opportunity on offer.”

🌍 How much do you know about air quality in Worcestershire?

Ahead of Clean Air Day later this month, we're asking residents to complete a short survey to help shape future campaigns and information about air quality.

Your feedback will help us understand what people know about air pollution, where they get information from and how we can work together to improve air quality across the county.

Take the survey here: https://bit.ly/4ucUM58

The survey closes on 31 July.

🥫 Peel it, scrunch it… then check it!

Those yoghurt tops, coffee jar seals and sauce lids might look the part — but are they really recyclable foil? Let’s find out 💚 Here’s the quick scrunch test:

👉 Give it a squeeze in your hand
👉 If it stays scrunched ✅ it’s foil — recycle it!
👉 If it springs back ❌ it’s plastic — pop it in the bin

If it passes the test:
👉 Give it a quick clean if needed
👉 Scrunch it up and add it to your recycling

Small lid, simple test, smarter recycling 🙌 Let’s keep the good stuff in the loop ♻️

Updated Skylark Post!
A big thank you to Clair Amos, who asked how on earth Charlie managed to find the Skylark nests, because honestly, they’re almost impossible to spot.

Charlie from our Heritage Team, along with an independent ecologist, spent time out in the field doing it the patient way. On a good-weather day, they slowly walked the site, watching the Skylarks with binoculars and using their experience to read the birds’ behaviour. By noting where the adults kept returning to, and with a little help from GPS on their phones, they worked out the approximate nest locations. We then marked protective circles of long grass around each one to give the birds space.

The lovely bit is that Skylarks grow quickly. They fledge in around 18–20 days, and from about a week old they leave the nest and hide in nearby vegetation, which boosts their chances even more.

A brilliant bit of teamwork, fieldcraft and care for a red‑listed species we’re really proud to have here in Wychavon.
