🚒We’re recruiting!🚨
Have you ever thought about joining the team at Perranporth Community Fire Station?
Do you live or work in Perranporth, or perhaps work from home nearby?
Becoming an on-call firefighter with Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service (CFRS) is something you can do alongside your current employment. Many employers support staff who respond to emergencies, and it’s also a great opportunity if you’re self-employed, work from home, or are retired and want to give back in your spare time.
⸻
🚨 How it works
When someone dials 999, our control room activates our pagers 📟. Whatever we’re doing—working, sleeping, gardening, exercising—we drop everything and respond to the fire station. Within five minutes we must be at the station, in our kit, and on the fire engine, ready to go.
We attend a wide range of incidents, including:
• Road traffic collisions
• Rescues from a variety of situations
• Flooding and hazardous materials
• Fires and more
⸻
🧑🚒 Skills and training
You’ll gain skills you may never learn elsewhere, such as:
• Firefighting and water rescue
• First aid and rope work
• Driving (including LGV on and off road)
• Working at height, using ladders, and pumping
Becoming a fully qualified firefighter takes around three years, involving both on- and off-station training, plus daytime and evening courses.
⸻
⏰ Availability
We really need people who can provide daytime cover, as well as some weekend availability.
Contracts are tailored to suit your availability and our needs, ranging from 30 to 120 hours per week. Don’t worry—that’s availability hours. On average, you’ll spend around 5 - 8 hours per week training or attending incidents. The rest of the time you’ll simply need to be within five minutes of the station and ready to respond.
⸻
✅ Requirements
• 18+ years old
• Able to reach 8.8 on the bleep test - this is tested annually
• No formal qualifications required, though there is an online entrance test
