Head gardener Tom's back with some and he's picked a real beauty that goes by the delightful name of the Japanese snowbell (Styrax japonicus).

A modest little tree, it can be easily overlooked in the Veitchii section of the walled garden, but duck underneath its fan-shaped branches and you'll find cascades of bell-shaped white flowers currently in bloom. Come back in the autumn for a display of bright yellow leaves.

One canny cow made a bid for freedom this morning and made it onto the Terrace. Thankfully a speedy response from the local farmer meant it was reunited with the herd - to the sound of much 'lowing' for the homecoming - and all before the garden opened to the public.

These beautiful Red Devon cows and their young make a striking addition to the sea view from the Terrace - which is open once again after storm damage.

Head gardener Tom's this week is the colourful candelabra primula which is named for the shape of the layers of flowers reaching up the stems.

Planted along the stream border near the top of the drive, it's a favourite spot for these and other moisture-loving plants such as arum lilies, crocosmia and astilbes.

There's still time to join in the half-term family fun! Stroll along shady paths as you spot the felt flowers on the woodland trail; find the wooden fungi in the orchard, have a go at the bean bag toss or guess the smell in the sniff boxes. Gather fallen flowers and leaves and add them to the willow bird sculpture, play hoopla or have a go at making an origami leaf.

We're open 10-5 Sunday to Thursday (closed Fri/Sat) and all activities are included with normal admission.

It's the news so many of you have been waiting for; our hard-working garden team and local tree surgeons have finally been able to clear the way for us to re-open the Terrace and its sea views.

It's been an epic task after the ferocity of storm Goretti felled 150 trees in the garden and destabilised countless others, but piece by piece, areas of the garden have been cleared and made safe. You've told us how important this view is to you so we're delighted to have it accessible again.

Please like and share this post to spread the news.
