GOLOWAN 2026 ROAD CLOSURES ℹ

Golowan Festival is just around the corner, starting with the Feast of St John Civic Parade next weekend (Sunday 21st June)!

There will be numerous road closures, traffic restrictions and diversions, which have been coordinated by the festival organisers and Cornwall Council for everyone's safety.

WE NEED PEOPLE FOR:
Donation collecting and stewarding Fireworks & Serpent Dance Friday 26th June
Mazey Day Saturday 27th June - parade stewards, parade water giving, help in the volunteer hub, donations, litter picking.
Quay Fair Day Sunday 28th - donation collecting, litter picking and help in the volunteer hub.
Penlee Park – donations and litter picking.
Don’t forget - It’s only a few hours of your time, it feels great to support your town, you get a delicious lunch provided by Trelya, you could win some Golowan merch and

What's happening with the shortlisting for the UK Town of Culture 2028?
Well, we've had an update from the panel...

"Thank you for taking the time to submit an expression of interest to the UK Town of Culture 2028 competition. We are delighted by the energy and enthusiasm it has generated amongst towns. We previously told you that we would announce the shortlist in Spring. As a result of the exceptional response we have received, the expert advisory panel require additional time to assess all of the bids, and we will now announce the shortlisted towns by the end of July."

How long can you cross your fingers for without requiring medical attention? (Asking for a friend... or two.) 🤞🤞🤞

FULL STEAM AHEAD FOR SIR HUMPHRY DAVY!
The statue of Penzance's most famous son, Sir Humphry Davy, was given a special steam clean today, gently removing the build up of 'organic material', and revealing his sparkling white marble physique.
A number of these are listed and strict guidance applies as to how they should be cleaned and maintained. The wrong types of cleaning products can damage memorials, and in some cases, even scrubbing with water may inadvertently cause damage to surfaces or inscriptions.
As such, Penzance Council has adopted the current recommended method of statue and memorial cleaning utilising hot steam at low pressure. This methodology provides the most effective, but least aggressive form of cleaning.
Over the past few days, Penzance Council contractor CCS Commercial Cleaning Ltd has professionally cleaned all of the memorials and statues in the parish which are maintained by the council, utilising the hot steam method.
