John Taylor jnr had spent the war in the Irish Guards Tank division, serving in Italy and Normandy where he was awarded the Military Cross. Taylors new garage was much admired as a building when it was built in 1936, but 8 years later in 1944 it suffered a major fire.
American soldiers were billeted in the top floor and escaped the fire and helped rescue vehicles but the fire spread as far as Quay St and set fire to one of the last thatched cottages in Penzance.
By 1947 the showroom and workshops had been rebuilt by the garage employees themselves and was ready to re-open a new chapter in its life.
An exhibition will be held in this former showroom, now PZ Gallery, by artists from the Newlyn School of Art Mentoring programme. 22nd to 24th November.

In 1920 Taylors Garage workshops opened in Coinagehall Street.
They needed more showroom space as Greenbank was limited and engaged a local architect, Geoffrey Bazeley to design a new building in his modernist style. The new building was opened in 1936, with showroons (now PZ gallery) petrol pumps and extensive workshops.
Come to the exhibition on 22nd to 24th Nov by at PZ gallery, and explore/contribute to the history of this site.

Taylors Garage acquired their Coinagehall Street site in about 1910 and sold the business to Vospers about 1980.
I'm working on a social history art project and would like to hear from anyone with memories, photos or information of the garage, its staff, and the Taylor family, especially John Vivian David Taylor, who was the proprietor from 1947 to 1980. Please email me at [email protected]
The results of this research will be shown at an exhibition at PZ gallery in November 2019, when I hope to meet people interested in the building and its history.
