At 6.30 on Saturday morning the Shap crew were mobilised to a chimney fire in the station area. On route Control informed them that an extra resource had been mobilised as the fire was spreading into the property. Once in attendance the crew quickly discovered a lintel above the fireplace was well alight and beginning to spread along exposed beams in the ceiling. The crew worked quickly to extinguish the fire and cut back and remove any burnt timber from the property avoiding any further spread.

A large buildup of soot sat on top of the register plate round the flue had lead to a breach in the liner. The homeowner hadn't been living in the property long and was unaware of the standard of work that had been previously carried out. We urge people to ensure a well recognised sweep and builder assist in a full check of any wood burners/fireplaces and the integrity of flue liners above the register plate before moving into a new property.

It is believed this fire could have been burning for a considerable length of time due to the smoke disappearing up the chimney but thankfully the homeowner was able to raise the alarm and evacuate the property.

Huge thanks to the heroes from Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service for coming out to help our RSPB Conservation Grazing team yesterday.

One of our cows had got stuck in a wet corner of a field and we’re so grateful for the muscle-power of the fire service to help pull her out on a .

Last night the Shap and Penrith crews were mobilised to a building fire in the station area. A large fire was clearly visible on route and an early make up for additional resources was made due to local knowledge and potential difficulties getting water to the scene. This was then scaled up further due to 999 footage received by fire control, including appliances from Patterdale Kendal and water bowser from Maryport. On arrival crews were met by a fire contained to the building involving timber and the building walls itself made of railway sleepers. A strong wind as well as fuelling the fire also assisted in blowing the fire away from a stack of straw contained within the building. A good early knock and water from a near by stream was enough to allow the crews to scale back resources and deal with the fire swiftly.

Happy New Year to one and all.

2025 draws to a close in what’s been a year of responding to a wide range of jobs for the crew. 81 Shouts in total for the station, not including returning to several protracted incidents which remained open for a couple of days. Of the 81 shouts, the crew were mobilised to 57 of them as the first appliance in our station area. On many occasion providing early intervention, preventing a greater level of damage to property or providing medical assistance to casualties. It just highlights how important it’s is to maintain the availability of on call pumps in rural areas. If you feel you could bring something to your local station then register interest on the Cumbria fire and rescue website.

A Christmas Day call out isn’t something we see often and thankfully the below incident was resolved swiftly and our on call crew were able to return to our families whom we are forever grateful to for being so patient and understanding in allowing us to carry out our role as firefighters whatever day of the year it may be.

This evening the Shap crew responded to a property fire in the village. Working smoke alarms and quick action from the occupant lead to the fire being extinguished and out on arrival, preventing what could have been a serious fire.

We ask people to please take care when decorating their homes for Xmas and where possible avoid the use of candles and naked flames. If they are to be used, to makes sure they’re placed in suitable firm holders and not placed near any soft furnishing or decorations. Also to avoid the urge to overload extension cables and ensure if used they’re fully unrolled and clear of anything that could accidentally cover and aid overheating.

I’m sure a lot of households will see increased numbers of people over the festive season and with this can come extra vehicles. Whilst we understand parking can be difficult in some areas we kindly ask that before leaving your vehicle any time of year ask yourself, have I left enough space for emergency vehicles to pass. Allowing us to pass through more quickly and safely can make a huge difference in responding to emergencies and the resulting outcome.

Thank you.
