The Last Post

Well what a day. Reform UK take control of Barnsley council.

The Lib Dem opportunity collapsed. The Green opportunity collapsed. Labour were decimated.

So, what does this mean?

The huge majority won by Reform allows them to do as they want. Address the £1bn debt? Pothole repairs? Bins emptying? What a challenge when we are skint!

We have 40 plus councillors for Reform from all walks of life. Transferable, experienced skills. A fresh set of eyes. Much needed.

A few Labour councillors retained their seats. For what it’s worth, well respected myself.

With such a huge majority, keen opposition in any democracy is essential. I’m pleased the sharper Labour candidates stay in place.

Please give these straight talking local people a chance. It’s not going to change overnight. However, one elected Reform Cllr today actually asked me ‘do I get paid anything?’

Last Post? It’s mine. Planted a few Reform seeds locally when there were just 4 of us, enjoyed helping to create a few foundations and no one happier than me to see the result today

One of the more amusing things that happened when I was first elected was meeting other councillors who introduced themselves a. ‘Councillor X, Councillor Y’.

Mainly the old guard in red rosettes who felt entitled for getting 10% of the electorates vote. It really is their life eh. A little title ….

Council employees were flabbergasted when I said ‘please, it’s David, not Councillor’ when I was initially addressed.

Bit of an Ian Beale syndrome for the EE fans out there.

Let’s vote wisely and strip a few of them of their well overused ‘titles’. It’s the reason many of them are doing it.

What’s even more worrying is the local Barnsley labour lot still support this shower of a government.

Thankfully, a straight talking Labour MP has seen through him and had the ‘balls’ to ask him to stand down.

Vote labour eh. The least popular prime minister ever? Supported by the local Barnsley labour party.

Sounds like saving their own skins, not saving the country. All of them. 🤮

Inspiring to see the Reform team today at Rockingham Ward, and most impressive to hear pretty much every second car passing sounding their horns. Huge support.

For anyone in Barnsley that has expressed dissatisfaction with the labour lot, change is achingly overdue. 3 votes for each candidate in each ward. Vote Reform, Reform and then Reform to give someone else a chance.

Lib- Dems here have long been a protest vote. Independents (other than bodging the odd pothole repair) are ineffective, and not bothering to vote is effectively accepting the status quo.

Anyone with any allegiance to this hated, U-turning, winter allowance stealing, dithering, cost of living increasing imposter Government surely can not be credible even at local council level.

What a great bunch of caring people these Reform candidates are, and in my view they fully deserve a chance.

The alternative is beyond scary.

Despite not really understanding what the bill finally contained (after last minute concessions delivered by WhatsApp), our two Labour MP’s voted dutifully in favour.

Described by many Labour MP’s as ‘shambolic’ and ‘humiliating’ for Labour & startled.

At a special meeting today following Full Council, a vote was held with a motion from the ruling Labour Party to change the local election cycle in Barnsley from the current system to just once every 4 years.

This means that whoever is elected next May will remain in position for 4 years, then every Cllr will be voted for again.

Needless to say, Labour Councillors were all instructed how to vote and the motion was passed.
