🎵 🇬🇧 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 🇬🇧 🎵

This past month, the Pipes, Drums & Bugles have been taking part in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo which has been celebrating its 75th Anniversary.

The first week started with intense rehearsals where we could see the show come together for this year’s theme, The Heroes who made us.

Following rehearsals came 24 shows and one impromptu night off due to Storm Floris! This year also included a spot for 2 SCOTS pipers playing along side the Massed Military Bands playing one of the Battalions Slow Marches, the 74th’s Slow March. This was to honour the Men of the 74th Highlanders who stood to attention as the HMS Birkenhead, which had struck a Rock of the coast of Cape Town in 1852 began to sink, allowing the woman and children to abandon ship first.

The Band have had a great month playing at the Tattoo and are now looking forward to some well earned summer leave.

The Tattoo will be broadcast on BBC 1 tonight at 8pm.

The Band would like to pass its congratulations on to two of its Corporals who today have been selected for promotion to Sergeant.

Cpl Crawford, who has been a key member of the platoon since joining us from 3 SCOTS in 2017, will take up the role of Drum Major and Assault Pioneer Platoon Sergeant. He takes over just in time to lead the band at this year’s Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo!

Cpl McWhinnie, who is currently posted out of the band as a piping instructor at ASBM&HD will take over the role of Pipe Sergeant at ASBM&HD later this year.

Massive congratulations to both soldiers, this is a huge milestone in their careers and we know they will be outstanding ambassadors to the band, Battalion and Regiment in their new appointments.

🚨🎼🥁 Pastures New! 🥁🎼🚨

The Band would like to bid farewell and good luck to outgoing Drum Major, Sgt McKay.

Since taking over in 2022, Sgt McKay has been a key part of all the bands state ceremonial events through-out his tenure, from the Queens Platinum Jubilee celebrations, State funerals and the Coronations of their Majesty’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

He has also led the band on two over seas exercises as Assault Pioneer Sergeant to Oman and Estonia as well as a successful assurance exercise earlier this year.

Sgt McKay, has moved onto the new role of Drum Sergeant at ASBM&HD, where we know he will add considerable value to training the next generation of Highland Drummers to the British Army.
