Listen carefully… can you hear it? 👂

Ranger Richard and our new Seasonal Ranger Molly were out on Dinas Head last week when they heard the unmistakable call of a cuckoo drifting across the coast. 🎶

Cuckoos are one of spring and early summer’s most distinctive sounds, although they are often heard more than seen. About the size of a dove, they have sleek blue-grey feathers, a long tail and pointed wings, which means they can sometimes be mistaken for birds of prey such as Kestrels or Sparrowhawks. 🐦

They are also famous for their unusual nesting behaviour. Rather than building their own nests, female cuckoos lay their eggs in the nests of other birds, often Meadow Pipits. The young cuckoo then hatches quickly and is raised by its unsuspecting host. 🪺

A wonderful sound to hear on Dinas Head, and a lovely reminder of the special wildlife that depends on the National Park’s coast and countryside. 🌊🌾

Have you heard a cuckoo this year? 👂

🌿 Our Ranger team recently met up with a group of Pembrokeshire Scouts for a mini BioBlitz at The Gann, a beautiful wetland area near Dale.

It was a brilliant few hours of exploring, spotting and recording wildlife, with around 50 different species recorded during the session. 🐦🦋🌱

A fantastic effort from everyone involved. We hope the Scouts enjoyed the rest of their camp too.

🌿 Great to see our South Rangers and volunteering team out on Caldey Island last week, working on an important conservation project.

The team were busy installing Manx shearwater nesting boxes, in the hope that these incredible seabirds will choose Caldey as a safe place to nest and raise their young in the future. 🐦🌊

A fantastic team effort, and fingers crossed the nesting boxes will help encourage more Manx shearwaters to make the island their home. 🤞💚

🌿 Volunteers and Park employees are being kept busy tackling Himalayan Balsam on watercourses throughout the National Park.

This plant was introduced to the UK in the 1800s and commonly grows in damp ground, such as ditches and along watercourses. It can form large, dense stands where it outcompetes other plants and reduces biodiversity.

Himalayan Balsam is mainly spread by seeds, so cutting or uprooting the plants before they seed can help stop it spreading. 🌱

INNS Officer Mat Tebbutt is coordinating works throughout the National Park to strategically tackle Himalayan Balsam across various river catchments.

This work is part of the NNF4 Naturally Connected project, funded through the Nature Networks Fund by Heritage Lottery on behalf of Welsh Government. 💚
