Unpredictable weather, massive crowds, and non-stop inspiration! ✈️✨

The RAF Air Cadet Village was buzzing at the Scottish International Air Show at Low Green, Ayr, showcasing a flavour of what our organisation has to offer. Visitors had the chance to step into the cockpit and test their piloting skills across our 7 Flight Simulators and mobile flight simulator setup, alongside a hands-on STEM section featuring 3D printing, LEGO Prime Kits, and interactive drone displays and the incredible 2345 - Leuchars Squadron, Air Training Corps Harrier Cockpit!

A huge thank you goes out to the incredible cadets and adult volunteers from across West Scotland Wing, Central Scotland Wing RAF Air Cadets & South East Scotland Wing Royal Air Force Air Cadets for supporting the event. Their hard work behind the scenes and engagement with the public were vital in making the Airshow a huge success.

It was also fantastic to see the Scotland & Northern Ireland Region Pipes and Drums performing right outside the Air Cadet Village their brilliant display drew in massive crowds throughout the day! 🥁🎶

We had visits from Assistant Chief of Air Staff RAF Air Vice Marshall Townsend, Air Officer Scotland Air Commodore Northover, Regional Commandant Air Cadets Scotland & Northern Ireland Region Royal Air Force Air Cadets Group Captain Khan and Wing Commander Crawley OC West Scotland Wing along with a visit from Provost South Ayrshire Council Iain Campbell

Interest was at an all-time high we spoke with scores of prospective new cadets ready to start their aviation journey, as well as adults eager to join our volunteer team across multiple units and make a difference.

🎉THE CARAS ARE BACK! 🎉

The Cadet Adult Recognition Awards organised by Lowland Reserve Forces' and Cadets' Association are returning for their seventh year, and they're sure to be better than ever!

The CARAs give Cadets the opportunity to give back to the Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs) that make a difference in their lives by nominating them for an award.

Nominations open on the 14th September - so don’t miss out on the chance to nominate your CFAV!

The ceremony will be hosted online on the Lowland RFCA YouTube on the 4th December 2026 📸

Cadets stepped up to tackle their Bronze Space badges, trading standard training for high-octane space exploration!

Behind the Mission:

* Hands-on Action: CI J Brown 2296 Dunoon RAF Air Cadets ran the practical demonstrations, getting cadets hands-on with everything from hovercraft mechanics to sound waves and gamma rays.

* Theory & Tech: Fg Off Ferguson 62 - 2nd Glasgow Squadron RAF Air Cadets took the helm on space theory, supported by Sgt G Ahmad 1740 Clydebank Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets who brought back expert insights fresh from her recent Gold Space course.

From the origins of the 20th-century Space Race to today's billion-dollar satellite networks, cadets got a front-row seat to the future of space tech. The goal? To inspire the next generation of innovators and show them that space really is a frontier with zero limits. 🌌

Huge thanks to the volunteers who turned this weekend into an out-of-this-world success! 🌟

🏆 NATIONAL SUCCESS FOR 1777 (DUMBARTON) SQUADRON! 🏆

We are beyond proud to announce that 1777 (Dumbarton) Squadron has been awarded the prestigious Morris Trophy for 2026, placing them as the runner-up best ATC squadron in the entire United Kingdom! 🇬🇧✨

Following rigorous inspections and submissions from across the UK, Commandant RAF Air Cadets, Air Commodore Al Lewis, and Senior Volunteer, Group Captain Ben Wakefield, selected 1777 Squadron for their cadet-led training, community impact, and innovative work in STEM, Cyber, and Sustainability.

We would also like to send a huge congratulations to 93 (City of Bath) Squadron being named the 2026 Lees Trophy winners!

🏆 GOLD DUKE OF EDINBURGH SUCCESS! 🏆

A massive congratulations to Cadet Warrant Officer McCairn from 1777 Dumbarton Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets, who attended the beautiful Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh to officially receive his Gold The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Award on Friday! 🏰🎖️

Achieving a Gold DofE award requires years of dedication, resilience, and hard work—balancing volunteering, physical challenges, mastering skills, and completing a grueling multi-day expedition. To see that effort recognised at the Royal Palace is a proud moment for him, his family, his Squadron and our Wing.

CWO, you are a fantastic role model to our younger cadets and a testament to what can be achieved through the Air Cadets.

Yesterday, cadets and adult volunteers from across West Scotland Wing headed into the heart of the city for Glasgow Armed Forces Day.

We also took the opportunity to have Adult Volunteers inside the Glasgow City College building running a recruitment stand! It was fantastic to meet so many enthusiastic people thank you for engaging with us!

A massive thank you to all the squadrons who came along to represent the Wing, and to our dedicated adult volunteers who make these days possible. 🙌

🏆 1777 Dumbarton Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets awarded the Scotland & Northern Ireland Region Royal Air Force Air Cadets Regional Winner & selected for Lees and Morris Trophy Inspection! 🏆

What an absolute honour it was for 1777 (Dumbarton) Squadron to welcome Commandant Air Cadets, to their squadron!

Following their incredible achievement as the Top Squadron in Scotland & Northern Ireland Region, the team visited 1777 last night to conduct the official assessment for the prestigious Lees & Morris Trophies to find the top Squadron in the UK!

The cadets and adult volunteers have put in an immense amount of hard work to reach this stage, and last night was a true showcase of the dedication, standards, and team spirit that make 1777 Squadron so special. Every single individual represented the squadron with distinction.

Now, the waiting game begins! The Commandant will continue assessing the top squadrons across the rest of the UK over the coming weeks. We look forward to hearing the final results in due course good luck to all other Squadrons involved.

No matter the final outcome, being recognised as the best in the Wing and Region is a phenomenal milestone. Huge congratulations to all 1777 cadets, adult volunteers and committee members!

Wing Commander George Campbell OBE OStJ DL FinstLM

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Wing Commander George Campbell OBE on 9 June 2026.

George joined the Air Training Corps in 1964 as a cadet with 2319 (Vale of Leven) Squadron and was commissioned into 1777 (Dumbarton Blackburn) Squadron in 1972.

In 1974, he was appointed Officer Commanding 1740 (Clydebank) Squadron. Over the following twelve years, the squadron enjoyed considerable success, including representing Scotland & Northern Ireland Region in the Sir Allan Lees Trophy on six occasions.

The next fourteen years saw George serve in a variety of Wing and Regional staff appointments before he was appointed Officer Commanding Glasgow and West Scotland Wing in 2000.

In 2004, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to the Air Training Corps. The citation recognised, amongst other achievements, his work as a shooting coach, Corps Shooting Captain, and Chairman of the Inter-Service Cadet R***e Meetings at Bisley.

In 2006, George transferred to Headquarters Air Cadets, where he established the Shooting Development Team—later known as the Marksmanship and Competitions Team—to lead and develop target r***e shooting and competitive marksmanship across the RAF Air Cadets. The RAFAC enjoyed significant competitive success during this period, including winning the Punch Trophy (for inter-service small-bore shooting) for a record setting 37th year in a row.

In 2019, he moved into his final appointment as Special Projects Officer (Shooting), before retiring in 2025 after an extraordinary 61 years of service in uniform.

Beyond his RAF Air Cadets appointments, George was selected as Adjutant of The Athelings British Cadet R***e Team during its tour to Canada in 1987 and served as Commandant of the Great Britain Under-19 Shooting Team in South Africa in 2000. He also gave distinguished service as a Trustee of the Council for Cadet R***e Shooting and as a Deputy Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire.

George will be remembered for his unwavering dedication, sense of duty, and commitment to developing generations of young people. His passion for target shooting, his leadership, and his friendship left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of serving alongside him. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family, and in particular his wife Alison, at this very sad time.
