Greater Change is a mobile donation system that enables the public to give directly to a homeless pe

During his time at university, our founder Alex engaged in Homeless Outreach and a frequent discussion at these sessions was whether giving change to those on the streets actually helped them. He thought this was a really important and interesting topic so investigated it further. After discussing the issue with people from local charities, it soon became very clear that they did not think giving

change helped, in a lot of cases they thought it caused harm. For example, Thames Reach estimate 80% of those begging do so to support a drug or alcohol addiction. Despite the above, an estimated hundreds of thousands of pounds are being given in cash directly to individuals on Oxford’s streets each year. We thought there should be a way to harness this goodwill in a productive manner. We thought a solution was desperately needed: with the help of many people and institutions we came up with Greater Change. It is a quick easy way of giving directly to somebody who is homeless or an umbrella group of local charities helping the homeless. If you give directly to somebody who is homeless through our app you can be confident money will be spent on constructive, long term solutions. This is because money is released through a support worker who ensures money is spent effectively.

As the financial year comes to an end, we're taking a moment to reflect on our success and impact in 2025.

We're really proud to say that over the course of 2025/26 financial year, we delivered an incredible £1.28million on personalised budgets.

This figure represents so much more than just the amount spent. Each grant delivered allowed someone to gain a dignified sense of control over their own life, their own journey, and their own future.

Large upfront costs like rent deposits and rent in advance can be unaffordable for some, and serve as a barrier to moving on from homelessness for good. Funding these costs, and opening up new pathways for employment and education can mean that people can go onto earning an income and creating a home of their own.

Samantha* and her Support Worker have applied to Greater Change for £1,500, for her first month's rent and the deposit for her new flat, which allows her to move closer to the new job she has been offered.

Stories like Fatima's show how relatively small financial boosts can change lives. Our personalised cash grants are designed to help people when they need it the most, and provide them with the tools to make genuine steps out of homelessness.
